MLA cuts palm in Assembly to protest BJP govt’s move of privatizing firms

Guwahati, Dec 3: A young Congress MLA cut his left palm and wrote on a banner with his blood in the entrance of Assam Assembly's main hall on Tuesday morning to stage a protest against the BJP-led government's move to hand over two paper mills, a tea garden, and a fertilizer firms to private companies.

The MLA, Rupjyoti Kurmi, who represents Mariani constituency took to the extreme way of protest at around 11.30 am when the winter session of the Assembly was underway.

No security personnel stopped him even as blood splattered his left hand and he spoke before television cameras in the entrance of the main hall of the state Assembly for more than 20 minutes. Bystanders who were shocked over his act termed it 'a security breach'. "Why no security personnel stopped him as he cut his palm with a blade? It's a serious security lapse," one of them said.

Kurmi was protesting against the state government's move to hand over two papers mills in Cachar in South Assam and another at Jagiroad in Central Assam to private companies. He also alleged that the BJP-led government was planning to hand over the Namrup fertilizer factory and a tea garden to private companies. Assam has witnessed strong protests against the privatisation move, with most demanding the government to revive the PSUs.

"I took this step as the government has neglected the peaceful protest. Today's protest should be considered as a message that Assam would witness bloody protests in the days to come if the government does not listen to the peaceful protests and relent," he said.

Debabrata Saikia, leader of Congress legislature party said the party did not support Kurmi's way of protest.

New Delhi, Aug 4: India witnessed a single-day spike of 52,050 COVID-19 cases as the total cases in the country reached 18,55,746, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Tuesday.

803 COVID-19 related deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. The total cases include 5,86,298 active cases, 12,30,510 cured/discharged/migrated and 38,938 deaths, the Health Ministry added.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state as it has a total of 1,47,324 active cases and 15,842 deaths. A total of 4,50,196 coronavirus cases have been recorded in the state up to Monday, according to Union Ministry of Health.

Tamil Nadu reported 5,609 new COVID-19 cases and 109 deaths on Monday, taking total cases to 2,63,222 including 2,02,283 discharges and 4,241 deaths, the state Health Department said.

The total cases in Delhi have risen to 1,38,482 including 1,24,254 recovered/discharged/migrated cases and 4,021 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, India recorded the highest single-day testing by conducting over 6.6 lakh tests to diagnose COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.
"In its fight against COVID-19, India scales a new high of 6,61,715 tests in the last 24 hours," said the Health Ministry in a tweet.

A total of 2,08,64,206 samples for COVID-19 have been tested across the country so far, said the Health Ministry.

New Delhi, Aug 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today tested positive for COVID-19 coronavirus infection and has been admitted to a hospital. 

Shah took to social media today to inform about his infection. “I have tested positive but my health is fine," he said, adding that he has been hospitalised on the assistance of doctors. 

The Union Home Minister also appealed to those who came into close contact with him in the last few days to get themselves tested for COVID-19.

New Delhi, May 17: With the highest-ever spike of close to 5,000 cases in the past 24 hours, the COVID-19 count in India has crossed 90,000 on Sunday.

With an increase of 4,987 COVID-19 cases being reported in the last 24 hours, the count has reached 90,927, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total number of active cases in the country stands at 53,946 today, while 2,872 deaths have been recorded due to the infection so far, with one patient having migrated. 120 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

However, on the positive side, close to 4,000 patients have also been cured and discharged in the past 24 hours, taking the tally of cured patients to 34,108.

With 30,706 confirmed cases, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected by the infection in the country.

It is followed by Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, with 10,988 and 10,585 cases, respectively.
The national capital, with 9,333 cases, is also one of the regions which is badly affected by the infection.
