Model-actor death: Vikram’s blood sample taken, statement recorded, say cops

Kolkata, May 9: A week after model-actor Sonika Singh Chauhan died in an accident while being driven by actor Vikram Chatterjee, the police on Saturday reportedly collected the actor’s blood samples to conduct an alcohol test. Chatterjee’s statement was also recorded, police said on Monday.

vikram“We have recorded the statement of Vikram. CCTV footage is being monitored. A few eyewitnesses have also recorded their statement… We are investigating,” said Joint CP (Crime) Vishal Garg. Sources said while recording his statement, Chatterjee had maintained he was not drunk when he was driving the car.

“The blood sample has been sent for test… CCTV footage of the accident spot and the pub where the duo had partied that night have been collected, and are being monitored,” said an officer.

When asked why Chatterjee’s blood samples were collected a week after the accident, as usually such a test should be conducted within 12 hours of consuming liquor, the officer said: “He was in hospital from April 29 to May 3. We were waiting for his discharge… We are also getting in touch with hospital to know if he was in an inebriated condition when he was admitted there.”

On April 29, a Toyota Corolla Altis, with Chatterjee behind the wheel, had crashed into a pavement on the Rash Behari Avenue in Kolkata.

Chauhan, who was reportedly not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Rubi General Hospital by Chatterjee. There, she died at 4.50 am. Chatterjee, who had got discharged from the same hospital after primary medication, got re-admitted there after Chauhan’s death.

Chauhan’s family later lodged a complaint against Chatterjee, accusing him of negligence. Police, which had already registered a suo motu case against Chatterjee, clubbed the family’s complaint and initiated a probe.

After Chatterjee got discharged on May 3, the police served him a notice, asking him to record his statement.

The next day, Chatterjee surrendered in court and was granted bail.

While he didn’t appear before the police, he went on to address the media, claiming that he was not drunk, and that he hadn’t been driving at a high speed at the time of the accident.

A model and close friend of Chauhan, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I don’t know why police are so keen on helping Vikram. The family had lodged an FIR against him. Vikram had guts to hold a press conference and not record his statement with the police. Suddenly, police are saying they have recorded his statement on Saturday. Why there is so much of secrecy?”

Kolhapur, Feb 21: Voicing against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), renowned lyrics and thinker Javed Akhtar has said that the act was an assault to secularism and integrity of India and with the ongoing protests, the nation had reached a threshold for an another struggle.

Speaking here on Thursday night at an event organised on the 5th death anniversary of CPI senior leader and progressive leader Com Govind Pansare, Mr Akhtar said the newly amended citizenship act was a plot to split the country.

Mr Javed said that communalism has a deep root in India and it spread after the formation of Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League in British India. "Muslim league got Pakistan but Hindu Mahasabha is still unsatisfied," he alleged and added that BJP was now 'working as a branch of RSS' and trying to 'split the country' through NRC.

Mumbai, Jan 7: Actor Anil Kapoor, who next will be seen onscreen in Malang, revealed that he always tells superstar Aamir Khan not to stop working with filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani.

Kapoor was interacting with the media at the trailer launch of Malang along with his co-actors Adtiya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Elli AvRam, film's director Mohit Suri and producers Luv Ranjan, Bhushan Kumar, Ankur Garg and Jay Shewakraman on Monday in Mumbai.

Anil Kapoor has worked with many directors and producers in his 40-year acting career.

Talking about camp culture in the Hindi film industry and praising makers of Malang, Kapoor said, "I feel we need producers like Ankur (Garg) and Luv (Ranjan). I have told Mohit (Suri) to continue doing films with them. I always tell Aamir Khan by calling him on the phone to say that you should not leave Raju Hirani (Rajkumar Hirani). Whenever I see films of both of them, I tell Aamir not to leave him."

He continued, "I feel whenever you make a good team then you should hold on to it. Team is very important and there are certain stars that come together to make something interesting and exciting."

Kapoor gave an example of Hollywood actors and filmmakers while backing his viewpoint.

"If you see Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio they do so many films together. They can work with others, too, but they keep working with each other. There is some magic, obviously. You have to go with the casting but somewhere I feel teams should stand by each other," the actor added.

Malang stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Khemu in lead roles. It is scheduled to release on February 7.

New Delhi, Apr 23: As the holy month of Ramzan is about to begin, several Muslim public figures on Thursday appealed to the community to offer tarawih and hold iftar inside their homes and follow the lockdown regulations imposed to tackle the coronavirus threat.

Television actor Iqbal Khan in a video message appealed to the people to not step out of their houses during Ramzan.

"This time around, whatever you do during Ramzan, you have to do it inside your houses. Do not visit mosques; offer tarawih (late evening prayers offered during Ramzan) at your homes. Your stepping outside will not only put you in a problem but may put your family members in trouble also," said Khan.

"And that will be wrong, do not go outside. If anyone says you have to go outside then they are wrong. Stay home and stay safe and help others stay safe too," he added.

Another TV actor and Tik Tok star Jannat Zubair asked people to avoid any kind of social gatherings so as to ensure the safety of everyone.

"I know we are in a difficult situation but there is no need to panic. We will overcome this and things will be fine. The holy month of Ramzan is going to start, please stay home, offer prayers at your homes and avoid family/friends gatherings for now. It is just a matter of time, things will be fine soon. Stay home and stay safe," she said.
Ramzan is likely to begin from April 24.
