Modi celebrates Guj, HP victories in Mangaluru; becomes third Indian PM to stay in coastal city

Mangaluru, Dec 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has celebrated the joy of Bharatiya Janata Party’s election victories in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh with his fans in the coastal city of Mangaluru.

Mr Modi arrived by a special flight at Mangaluru International Airport at 12:05 a.m. on Tuesday though he was expected to land there at 10:30 p.m. on Monday.

Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, Karnataka top cop Neelamani Raju, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, local MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, legislators Sunil Kumar, Kota Srinivas Poojary, S Angara were present at the Airport among others to welcome the PM.

It was double celebration for the BJP leaders and workers in Mangaluru as their supreme leader himself was present with them to celebrate the party’s poll victories in two states.

Mr Modi then headed to Circuit House in the city amid tight security and spent the night there. He is expected to fly to Lakshadweep by a special helicopter on Tuesday morning.

This is PM’s second visit to the coastal Karnataka within two months. He had visited Dharmasthala on October 29. He is likely to visit Udupi soon, sources said. 

Mr Modi became the third Prime Minister of India to stay in Mangaluru. In 1957 then PM Jawaharlal Nehru had stayed in the house of late Congress leader Octavia Albuquerque. During his second visit he had stayed in the house of Gajanana Rao Pandith. In 1971 then PM Indira Gandhi had stayed at Circuit House during a poll campaign in Mangaluru.

Kanpur,  Jul 3: A total of eight police personnel including Deputy Superintendent of Police Devendra Mishra have lost their lives after they were fired upon by criminals in the early hours of Friday.

The incident took place when a police team had gone to raid history-sheeter Vikas Dubey's house.

Senior Superintendent of Police and Inspector General of Police have reached the spot and forensics team is examining the area.

State Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed his condolence to the families of the eight Police personnel who lost their lives after being fired upon by criminals in Kanpur. He has directed Director General of Police HC Awasthi to take strict action against criminals. He also sought a report of the incident.

Mangaluru, May 12: The first repatriation flight to Mangaluru from Dubai with nearly 180 passengers landed at the international airport here. 

The total passengers, including 88 men, 84 women, five children and two infants arrived by the Air India Express flight IX 384 late Tuesday night, airport sources said.

There were 12 medical emergency cases and 38 pregnant women among them, they said. The district administration had made arrangements for receiving the passengers, who were provided with sanitizers and masks. They were advised to maintain social distancing as per the health protocol.

All the foreign returnees were screened as per the standard operating procedure to ensure that they were asymptomatic.

The passengers were taken to their chosen place of accommodation in KSRTC buses. They will be undergoing a 14-day quarantine in the places, which will be monitored by doctors assigned by the health department. More than 17 hotels and 12 hostels have been arranged for the accommodation of the returnees.

Passengers were also asked to download the mandatory 'Aroygya Sethu' app for contact tracing. Rahul Shinde IAS who is in charge of arranging quarantine facilities, airport director V V Rao and district health officer Ramachandra Bairy were present at the airport.

Mangaluru, July 31: Extending Eid al-Adha greetings to the people, S M Rashid Haji, president of the Bearys chamber of commerce & industry has termed the festival as a symbol of sacrifice and patience. 

“Eid al-Adha commemorates the Prophet Ibraheem’s (a) test of faith and sacrifices. It symbolizes sacrifice and endurance,” he said.

“Every human being during his lifetime faces one or the other test from the Almighty… Now we are collectively facing the hardship... May this festival bring goodness and peace, and herald the end of pandemic,” he said.
