Modi didn’t ask for Dr Zakir Naik’s extradition, clarifies Malaysia PM

Vladivostok, Sept 17: Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad today clarified that his Indian counterpart PM Narendra Modi did not ask for the extradition of self-exiled doctor-turned-preacher Dr Zakir Naik.

"Zakir Naik isn't a national of this country. He was given permanent status by the previous government. A permanent resident is not supposed to make comments on the country's system or politics. He breached that so now he isn't allowed to speak,” Mahathir Mohamad was quoted as saying by local media.

On the question of Dr Naik’s extradition, the Malaysian PM said: "Not many countries want him. I met Prime Minister Modi, he didn't ask me for him. This man could also be troublesome for India."

Mohamad’s statements fly in the face of India’s stand on the issue as Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale had said that PM Modi raised the issue of Naik's extradition during a meeting between with his counterpart on the sidelines of the fifth meeting of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

"Both the parties have decided that our officials will stay in contact regarding the matter and it is an important issue for us," Gokhale said.

Dr Naik, a 53-year-old scholar, left India in 2016 and subsequently moved to Malaysia, where he was granted permanent residency.

He has been banned from any public activities in the multi-ethnic country after his remarks against Malaysian Hindus and Chinese on August 8.

Bengaluru, May 30: Health Minister B Sriramulu banned the consumption of chewing tobacco in public places on Saturday, which is marked as World Tobacco Day. The ban would include chewing paan masala and spitting in public places.

In June 2013, the state banned the manufacture, storage, sale, or distribution of gutka and paan masala containing tobacco or nicotine as ingredients to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use. On October 26, 2016, the state proscribed all kinds of chewing tobacco, containing tobacco or nicotine or both in accordance with the Supreme Court order.

Karnataka is the second state in India to ban e-cigarettes. The state also prohibited single cigarettes. Until September 2019, the state counselled 15,698 patients in tobacco cessation centres set up in private dental colleges.

Bengaluru, Jan 18: The Karnataka state government has reportedly initiated the process to ban organizations like Popular Front of India (PFI).

State Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday evening said that instructions have been given to the police and officers concerned to gather information about the activities of such organisations so that necessary inputs can be sent to the Center.

He made it clear that the action would not be limited against PFI and SDFI (Social Democratic Front of India), rather any organisation which is involved in such activities, would meet the same fate.

Udupi, Apr 20: Patients from outside the district visiting Udupi for emergency treatment should be in possession of a certificate, issued by the district health officer or taluk health officer, that they do not have any symptoms of Covid-19.

The decision was taken during an expert committee meeting chaired by Udupi Deputy Commissioner Jagadeesha on Sunday.

The Deputy Commissioner said he will send a letter to all Deputy Commissioners in this regard. The patients from other districts will be treated in various hospitals in Udupi, only in case of emergency.
