New Delhi, Dec 11: Former Finance Secretary Shaktikanta Das was on Tuesday appointed the 25th governor of the Reserve Bank of India with immediate effect. Das, 61, is currently the member of 15th Finance Commission.
The face of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's demonetisation move, Das was India's revenue secretary when the note ban was slapped in November 2016 and defended the move in media.
Das was widely perceived to be a contender for the RBI governor after the exit of former governor Raghuram Rajan in 2016.
He has earlier served on central bank's board. Last year, Das was also the first bureaucrat who criticised the methodology of global rating agencies and sought a sovereign rating upgrade for India amidst two back-to-back reforms- demonetisation and GST.
Das's appointment takes place with immediate effect and comes after the surprise resignation of Urjit Patel as RBI Governor.
