'Modi' means 'Man Of Damage to India": Singhvi

April 21, 2014

singviAhmedabad, Apr 21: Giving all credit to Gujarati people for the state's development, Congress national spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi today criticised the BJP and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for taking all the credit and hiding crucial information from the people.

During his visit here, Singhvi labelled Modi as a 'Man Of Damage to India' and BJP as the 'Bharat Jalao Party', referring to Modi's comment on the Gandhi family yesterday, when Modi asked the Congress to explain the 'RSVP' (Rahul Sonia Vadra Priyanka) model.

"I don't know how true RSVP is, but, my RSVP response to Modi is that he is a 'Man Of Damage to India' -- MODI. BJP is Bharat Jalao Party" said Singhvi, who also accused BJP of divisive politics and provoking "brother against brother".

He was referring to Bihar BJP leader Giriraj Singh's jibe yesterday, where Singh said anti-Modi people would have to flee to Pakistan after election results.

"Singh's comment shows that BJP believes in creating a rift between communities and dividing the nation for their benefit, but today, I am here to talk about Modi's false and misleading propaganda about development in Gujarat. I have no problem admitting that Gujarat has prospered, but that is because of the enterprising nature of the Gujarati people; not because of BJP or Modi being chief minister," said Singhvi, who came prepared with data to support his claims.

Singhvi claimed that after Modi took over as CM in 2001, Gujarat's average growth rate remained at 9 per cent to 10 per cent.

"If you go back and check figures of the past three governments, it was near 16 per cent for almost 15 years, but no CM ever boasted about the achievement. While Modi, who actually brought down the growth, keeps on patting his own back," Singhvi said.

He tore apart Modi's tall claims about several other development parameters.

"In many conclaves, Modi claims that Gujarat is Number one in industrial development, which is a white lie. Maharashtra is Number one, followed by Delhi, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In software exports, Gujarat ranks 11th in India. Even Uttar Pradesh is ahead of Gujarat in IT," Singhvi said.

"Gujarat ranks eighth in per capita income, 14th in the prosperity index, eighth in poverty reduction, and eighth in GDP. Even Bihar is ahead of Gujarat in GDP," claimed Singhvi, who alleged that Modi's claims of tourism and sports development is nothing but a marketing gimmick.

Singhvi also added that even after organising sports events like 'Khel Mahakumbh', Gujarat stands nowhere in sports.

"Haryana bagged 21 gold medals in Commonwealth games, while Gujarat bagged zero, but like Modi, Haryana Chief Minister never boasted about it. Similarly, Gujarat bagged no gold medal in the recent national games, while a total of 444 gold medals were conferred in that event. I challenge Modi on these facts," Singhvi said.

When asked why Priyanka Gandhi is kept away from active politics and campaigning, Singhvi claimed that she is very much into campaigning.

"However, we should also respect the boundaries she has set for herself. We must not interfere in what she decided for herself," Singhvi said.

New Delhi, Apr 24: The Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC) on Friday accused Delhi Police of framing two of its members - Meeran Haider, Safoora Zargar, along with student leader Umar Khalid, as part of "an imaginary conspiracy behind the recent North East Delhi riots".

While Haider was arrested on April 2, Zargar was taken in custody on April 10 for their alleged involvement in fuelling the riots.

"These arrests by the police have little ground, and the charges seem to have no rhyme or reason. Safoora was even granted bail in the case she was initially arrested in, following which she was arrested and had heavier charges placed against her," the JCC said in a statement.

Meeran, Safoora and Umar have been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which allows curbing of fundamental rights in order to protect the sovereignty of India. The JCC, however, claimed that in this case, the Act is being used to suppress their voices.

"This Act has been used against many activists working to protect constitutional morality, a list which now includes members of the JCC, a wholly constitutionalist collective of students and alumni," the JCC said, defending its members.

JCC maintained it had no role in Delhi riots, but apprehended that more people will be arrested by the Delhi Police as part of its conspiracy against students and protestors.

"It is almost certain that more protesters will be framed and arrested in the conspiracy invented by the Delhi Police. JCC reiterates that it played no part in the riots, and this fact will be proved before any court of law," it said in a statement.

It also demanded political parties, and university administration take a stand for the two accused JCC members and student leader Umar Khalid.

The JCC came into existence after a violent face-off between Delhi Police and unruly anti-CAA protestors left Jamia Millia Islamia vandalised. It was after this, that a group of students from the Jamia Millia formed it to decide upon the future course of actions in protest against the CAA and the police action.

New Delhi, Feb 16: Just an hour ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Arvind Kejriwal invited the people of Delhi again for his oath-taking ceremony at Ramlila Maidan today.

Referring himself as "son of Delhi", the AAP convener today tweeted saying, "Delhiites, your son is going to take oath as Delhi chief minister for the third time. You must come to bless your son".

The AAP national convener will be sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Delhi for the third time in a row.

Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to take oath along with other ministers at Ramlila Maidan.

On Saturday, Kejriwal, through a tweet, has said that autorickshaw drivers, students, teachers, doctors, labourers, etc will be the "chief guests".

The guest list put out by the AAP includes ''Delhi ke Nirmata''- people who contributed to the development of the city during the last five years.

These include Sumit Nagal, a Delhi government school student and an international Tennis player, Laxman Chaudhry an auto driver, Manu Gulati a teacher and "one of the many architects of Delhi Governance Model", Dalbir Singh a farmer, Ratan Jamshed Batliboi - the architect of the famous Signature Bridge among others.

By winning 62 seats by cashing in on the plank of development, his party nearly repeated its 2015 performance, sweeping the Assembly polls in the face of a high-voltage campaign by the BJP, which had fielded a battery of Union Ministers and Chief Ministers in its electioneering, spearheaded by Home Minister Amit Shah.

The BJP marginally improved its tally, managing just eight seats from its 2015''s tally of three seats. The Congress failed to open its account in the second successive election.

Pune, Jan 1: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi president Prakash Ambedkar paid tributes at the 'Jay Stambh' near here on Wednesday on the 202nd anniversary of Koregaon Bhima battle.

Lakhs of people congregate every year at the 'Jay Stambh' (victory pillar) near Koregaon Bhima village to offer tributes on the anniversary of the battle, which was fought on January 1, 1818 between the British East India Company and the Peshwa faction of the Maratha Confederacy.

Violence broke out during the bicentenary celebrations of the Koregaon Bhima battle on January 1, 2018 in which one person was killed and several others were injured.

Police have made elaborate security arrangements to ensure no untoward incident takes place during the congregation at the victory pillar, an official said.

Talking to reporters after visiting the victory pillar, Pawar said he came to offer tributes on behalf of the people of Maharashtra.

"This pillar has history and every year lakhs of people come here. Some untoward incidents took place two years ago, but the government is taking utmost care and elaborate police bandobast has been made here to ensure that no untoward incident takes place," he said.

Pawar also urged people to visit the war memorial in a peaceful manner.

"I appeal to people to come here and offer their tributes, but maintain peace and do not believe in rumours," the NCP leader said.

Prakash Ambedkar also offered his tributes at the victory pillar.

Pune Police last week issued notices to several people, including right-wing leaders Milind Ekbote and Sambhaji Bhide, and members of Kabir Kala Manch, barring them from entering the district for four days from December 29.

The notices, as part of preventive action, were issued to all those against whom cases were registered in connection with the violence two years ago.

Ekbote was arrested in March 2018 for allegedly instigating and orchestrating the violence around Koregaon Bhima.

Bhide was also booked and named in the FIR, but never arrested.

The police attributed the violence to the Elgar Parishad conclave held here on December 31, 2017, where provocative speeches were allegedly made.

They are also probing the alleged "Maoist link" of some activists to the Elgar Parishad conclave.

Several Dalit groups observe the anniversary of the Koregaon Bhima battle, in which the British defeated the Peshwas of Maharashtra.

The memorial, located at Perne village on Pune- Ahmednagar road, was constructed by the British in the memory of soldiers who died in the battle.

Dalit leaders commemorate the British victory as soldiers from the Mahar community were part of the East India Company's forces.

The Peshwas were Brahmins, and the victory is seen as a symbol of assertiveness by Dalits.
