Most Indians consume online content during office hours: Survey

With the online content on mobile phones increasing, most Indian viewers consume the content during the traditional office hours of 10 am-6 pm, a recent survey said.

As per the survey conducted jointly by KPMG and Eros Now, Indians spend more than around 70 minutes per day on online video platforms, with a consumption frequency of 12.5 times a week or more than once a day, it said.

For this report, a survey was commissioned across 1,458 over-the-top users in 16 cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Panipat, Nagpur and Madurai, to ascertain the usage of OTT platforms by consumers.

"Nearly 87 per cent of the respondents consumed content on their mobile phones, with nearly 28 per cent of the respondents consuming content during the traditional office hours of 10 am-6 pm," the report said.

The customer sets are fairly heterogeneous, there is a trend of homogeneity that was observed in terms of consumption frequency and duration across age groups, income levels and genders, it said.

The report stated that movies have a larger contribution of viewership also on smart TV and larger screens and are also more tailored to the SVOD (subscription video on demand) premium subscription business.

"Well known global franchises may find a niche audience but predominantly, it will be Indian narratives that will be popular," it said.

Also, original content is fast emerging as an important category, with close to 10 per cent respondents alluding to the preference for the same.

"This is significant given the limited supply on original content on platforms at present, as compared to library content," the report noted.

The study highlighted that freshness and uniqueness of content are the key determining factors for installation and uninstallation of apps, as well as respondents subscribing to platforms.

"Nearly 87 per cent of the respondents install an app considering the quality of content," it said.

Around 30 per cent of the respondents prefer watching content in languages other than Hindi and English, the report said.

"The preference for content consumption is significant in the native languages across large parts of the country, with south India observed to be the most loyal to their native tongue," it said.

Thrissur, Mar 7: A local temple in Kerala is at the centre of a social media storm after the picture of a ''Brahmins-only toilet'' outside its main campus went viral on online platforms, prompting the management to remove the signboard.

The picture of three toilets, with signboards showing "Men", "Women" and "Brahmins", at the Kuttumukku Mahadeva Temple in Thrissur, has gone viral with many social media users viewing it as an unethical practise that can portray the progressive state in a bad light.

However, temple officials said the toilets were located outside the main campus and the board was brought to their notice only now.

Kannan, an official of the temple committee, said the board was placed nearly two decades ago and nobody raised any complaint against it so far.

"That particular toilet was being used by priests and other temple employees. We didn't even notice that board... As soon as we came to know about it, we removed it and affixed a staff-only board," he told PTI.

Also a CPI-M functionary and ward councillor, Kannan said the shrine and it's management was against all kinds of unethical customs.

The temple official said they were planning to pursue legal measures against the man who posted the photo of the toilets on social media.

"We suspect that he did it deliberately to create issues during the time of the festival and to tarnish the shrine's reputation. Not only that, the photo he shared was an old one though he claimed that it was taken during the time of the festival, " he said.

Chitradurga, Feb 10: President of the BJP State unit Nalin Kumar Kateel on Sunday hit out at Congress leader M. Mallikarjun Kharge for allegedly likening Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a “zero candle bulb”.

Mr. Kateel told reporters here that Mr. Modi was a “1,000 watt bulb that gave light to the world”, and compared Mr. Kharge to a lamp that had burned out politically.

Mr. Kateel charged that Mr. Kharge had become frustrated after losing the elections and after his party did not even consider him for a Rajya Sabha seat. And this had made the Congress leader to make wild charges against the Prime Minister.

Lashing out at the Congress, Mr. Kateel alleged that the Congress was continuing the “divide and rule” policy of the British and accused the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda of being the “other face of the Congress”.

Mr. Kateel also came down on the former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He ridiculed the Congress for the delay in choosing a new KPCC chief after Dinesh Gundu Rao submitted his resignation.

Mangaluru, Mar 30: Indira Canteens and Kadiri Manjunatha Temple here have started distributing food packets to the poor, stranded labours, destitute and needy in the wake of the COVID-19 lockdown.

''We have prepared over 2,000 food packets in the morning. The same number will be prepared in the afternoon and night for distribution," said Prabhakar Shetty from Indira canteen at Urwastore in Mangaluru on Monday.

"The MCC teams come and collect food for distribution among the poor, beggars and destitute," he added.
