Mother throws 3 kids to well, then commits suicide

Kalaburgi, Oct 4: A woman allegedly pushed all her three children into a well and later committed suicide by jumping into the same well in a field at Hadi Basavanna, a small hamlet, behind seismology centre near Sharana Sirasagi village, on the outskirts of the city on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased have been identified as Jayashri Godake (35) and her children Pavitra, (12), Sunil (10) and Anil (6). Incidentally, the well is located in the land owned by Jayashri’s father Mahadevappa Jambare.

Farahatabad ASI Sharanagouda Patil said, the incident came to light on Sunday night. “The body of Jayashri was retrieved at around 1:00 am on Monday and has already been shifted to District Hospital in Kalaburagi. However, the bodies of the children were retrieved from the well on Monday morning and afternoon.”

The fire brigade personnel drained the water from the well to retrieve the bodies. The bodies of the children were later shifted to the district hospital in a tractor.

Jayashri, daughter of Mahadevappa and Ratnabai Jambare, residents of Sharana Sirasagi, was married to Basavaraj Godake, a resident of Teerth in Aland taluk around 16 years ago. Jayashri’s children Pavitra and Sunil were studying in a school in Kalaburagi while Anil was studying in a school in the village.

Patil said that Godake, a habitual drinker, used to harass his wife and even beat her. Dejected, she might have taken the extreme step, he added.

Mahadevappa owns around ten acres of land and a house at Hadi Basavanna. The family, which had dug a well in the farm land, was residing in the village for the past few months.

Sources in the family said, Jayashri had been staying in her father’s house in Hadi Basavanna for the past two months.

On Sunday, she along with her children had left the house on the pretext of getting vegetables from the farm. However, she took the extreme step. A case has been registered by Farahatabad police station.

Cuttack, Jan 16: At least 15 passengers were injured as five coaches of the Mumbai-Bhubaneswar Lokmanya Tilak Express derailed and three more were displaced after colliding with a goods train amid heavy fog near Cuttack in Odisha on Thursday, railway officials said.

Railway officials had earlier said that 25 passengers were injured in the incident but later officers who reached the site reported that four passengers were found to have suffered major injuries and 11 had received minor injuries.

Passengers with major injuries have been sent to Cuttack Medical College. All passengers are stated to be out of danger.

Officials said the accident happened when the passenger train hit the guard van of a good train around 7 am between Salagaon and Nergundi stations.

The officials said there was heavy fog at the site but it was not clear what led to the accident. The speedometer of both the trains have been seized for inquiry, East Coast Railway Spokesperson J P Mishra said.

Buses have been arranged for all remaining passengers to move towards their destination.

Cuttack is around 10-12 km away and Bhubaneswar(Terminating station) is 35 km.

The accident disrupted train services in the area.

Five trains have been affected due to the accident where restoration work in underway. These include the Bhubaneswar-Mumbai LTT SF Express, the Puri-Rourkela Express, Dhanbad-Bhubaneshwar Rajyarani Express which have all been diverted via Naraj.

"East Coast Railway acknowledges with deep gratitude help of nearby locals and villagers who have displayed great humanitarian values and come to the rescue of injured passengers," Mishra said.

Jun 5: A young woman was forced to drink liquor allegedly by her husband after which he along with four friends assaulted, burnt her with cigarette butts and raped her in front of her five year-old son, police said on Friday.

All the five, who were taken into custody earlier, have been arrested. The shocking incident occurred in the state capital last night.

The incident came to light after the 25-year-old woman, approached police and complained against her husband and his four friends.

A case has been registered against the five accused for kidnapping, assaulting and gangrape.

Since the incident took place in front of the child, a case under Protection of children from sexual offices Act has also been charged against the accused.

Meanwhile, State health and family welfare minister K K Shailaja asked the state police chief to take stringentction against the culprits as "such cruelty happened in front of her child."

The Kerala State Women's Commission on its own registered a case and sought report from the Thiruvananthapuram Rural SP.

She managed to escape from there and pleaded for help from a young man, who saw in heran inebriatedstate, and took her to her house and informed police.

The man later told some television channels that she was crying, had injuries on her face and pleaded for help.

Police have recorded the statement of the woman, who was admitted to a government hospital here and later discharged.

She had also stated that the men had tortured her using cigarette butts.

Lucknow, May 1: Six members of a family were allegedly hacked to death by another family member over a property dispute in Gudauli village in the Banthra area on the outskirts of the city on Thursday, police said.

The accused, Ajay Singh (26), went to the local police station after committing the crime and surrendered, they added.

Singh allegedly had a heated argument with the family members over a property and attacked them with a sharp-edged weapon, the police said.

The accused allegedly killed his mother, father, elder brother, his wife and two children -- a son and a daughter -- they added.

The victims were identified as Amar (60), Ramsakhi (55), Arun (40), Ramdulari (35), Saurabh (7) and Sarika (2).

When asked, Commissioner of Police Sujeet Pandey said six members of a family were killed and the accused surrendered before the police.
