MRPL explosion: victim's kin promised Rs 10 lakh compensation; injured recovering

Mangalore, January 23: The family members of Nagesh Kulal, who was killed in an accidental explosion at the Sulphur Recovery Unit II of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), have been promised compensation of Rs 10 lakh.

“The MRPL management has agreed to pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the kin of deceased Nagesh”, said MRPL-ONGC Karmachari Sangha president Praveen Kumar.

Meanwhile Surathkal police have booked a case of negligence against Mahesh Kumar, a technician with MRPL, Praveen Kumar, the plant supervisor, and against the manager of Entech Constructions, through which contract workers have been employed at the site during the explosion.

Among the five injured the condition of the Sirajuddeen (21), a resident of Krishnapur is still critical. He has been undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in the city.

The other four injured workers - Basheer, Ashwith, Srinivas, and Mahesh Kumar- are recovering.

Gadag, Aug 1: A woman in Gadag district of Karnataka mortgaged her 'mangalsutra' to buy a television set for her children following the Karnataka government's decision to continue the classes through TV amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

A resident of Radder Naganur village, Kasturi, who is also a mother of two, purchased a television set against her 'mangalsutra' for Rs 14,000. She bought the TV after her children's school teachers asked them to attend classes via the television set.

Kasturi said, "I can not send the children to the neighbours' house every day and it was necessary for them to study. We had no other option but to buy a TV set."

She said, "Both, my husband and I are daily wage workers and during coronavirus, we do not have work or money."

"I sold my 'mangalsutra' for Rs 20,000 and bought a TV for Rs 14,000," said Kasturi while happily adding, "Now, my kids can study at home itself."

Kasturi's daughter, Surekha said, "We did not have the TV for several months but now when we have it, we will study and get a bigger 'mangalsutra' for my mother."

Bengaluru, Apr 5: Fake news spreads faster and more easily nowadays through the internet, social media and instant messaging and such news about the COVID-19 pandemic have been labeled a dangerous “infodemic”.

These messages may contain useless, incorrect or even harmful information and advice, which can hamper the public health response and add to social disorder and division.

Asking people to avoid fake news on COVID-19, Hemant Nimbalkar IPS, IGP and Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration), shared a photo on his Twitter page and wrote, “One Mask For Ear Too"

Bengaluru, Feb 26: The police remand of student activist Amulya Leona Noronha, who was produced before a Magistrate, after a no-show at the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, was extended by 10 more days.

The Fifth Additional Metropolitan Magistrate at the Magistrate's home on Tuesday night had remanded her to police custody for 10 days, less than the 14 days asked for by the Special Investigative Team, considering that she has already spent over four days in judicial custody.

Amulya Noronha, a student of NMKRV College for Women, had raised pro-Pakistan slogans by shouting ''Pakistan Zindabad'' at an anti-CAA protest in Bangalore on 20th February following which the city police filed a case of sedition against her.
