Mulayam holds emergency meet on Muzaffarnagar violence

September 8, 2013
Lucknow, Sep 8: Rattled by the communal flare-up in Muzaffarnagar which left 12 killed and more than three dozen injured, the top leadership of the Samajwadi Party (SP) went into a huddle in the state capital Sunday.

At a meeting convened at his residence, party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav is learnt to have expressed his displeasure at the inability of the state government in stopping the violence, despite the simmering overtones since Aug 27.

Sources told IANS that the SP chief was closely monitoring the situation on the ground after his arrival from New Delhi late Saturday.

It was at his behest that the army's help was sought to contain the spread of violence, which had found inroads into the countryside.

An SP leader said Mulayam Singh Yadav was miffed at the failure of the state police and gave a dressing down to home department officials, most of whom he had personally hand-picked when the SP government took over last year.

The SP chief is learnt to have told his son and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in no uncertain terms that "incidents like this would not only hurt the party prospects in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls but also tar your image as an administrator".

Mulayam Singh Yadav, other than summoning police and home officials, also spoke to religious heads in western UP and asked them to appeal for calm. He also spoke on telephone with party leaders of western Uttar Pradesh and took feedback from them on the violence-hit areas.

Chief Secretary Jawed Usmani was present at the meeting and informed Mulayam Singh Yadav that he had issued advisories to district officials of possible communal tension in some parts of the state and asked them to take adequate steps. Officials, however, did not take this seriously, Mulayam was told.

The fact that 12 people lost their lives in the clash was a blot on the government Mulayam Sibgh Yadav said, and asked officials to take steps not only to douse the communal flare-up but to also ensure there was no repeat of such incidents.

New Delhi, Mar 5: A Delhi court Thursday issued fresh death warrants for execution of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case for March 20 at 5.30 am.

Additional Sessions Judge Dharmendra Rana fixed March 20 as the new date of execution after it was told by the Delhi government that the convicts have exhausted all their legal remedies.

The lawyer for the four death row convicts also told the court that there was no legal impediment for the court to proceed in fixing the date of execution.

New Delhi, Feb 11: Celebrations broke out at the AAP headquarters here as early vote-counting trends for the Delhi Assembly polls on Tuesday showed a comfortable victory for the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led party.

The headquarters were decorated with blue and white balloons and big cut-outs of Kejriwal were placed in different parts of the party office.

"We knew it. We have changed the politics of this country. Now it is Delhi, next is India," said Sanjeev Singh, a party volunteer from Hari Nagar.

Another volunteer Fareen Khan said, "We hope we get such a clear majority that a message goes out that doing Hindu-Muslim politics will not work anymore."

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading in 26 seats while the BJP is leading in 14 seats, according to early trends by the Election Commission.

According to the EC's website, AAP convenor Kejriwal is leading in his New Delhi constituency.

Kejriwal reached the party office as the counting of votes got underway.

Counting centres are spread across 21 locations, spanning 70 constituencies.

Polling for the 70-member Delhi Assembly was held on Saturday.

Jun 26: The Supreme Court on Friday permitted the Centre and the CBSE to cancel the remaining board examinations due to the COVID-19 pandemic and gave the go-ahead for the scheme to award marks to students for the cancelled papers scheduled to be held in July.

A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna permitted the CBSE to issue a notification for the cancellation of the examinations.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and the CBSE, said that the assessment scheme would consider marks scored by students in the last three papers of the board exams.

Both CBSE and ICSE told the top court that the results of the class X and XII board exams can be declared by the middle of July.

The top court was hearing pleas seeking relief, including scrapping of remaining exams of Class 12 scheduled from July 1 to 15, in view of increasing number of COVID-19 cases. Similar relief was sought by the ICSE Board also.
