Mumbai Coaching Centre Owner Cheated of Rs 9.4 Lakh by Woman on Social Media

Mumbai, Nov 9: A 65-year-old man was allegedly duped of Rs 9.4 lakh by an unidentified woman who had befriended him on social media and her accomplice, police said.

The man, resident of suburban Kandivali here, filed a complaint Wednesday, a police official said.

The complainant, who runs coaching classes, was befriended by a woman on social media in August this year. The woman said her name was Leonie and she ran a salon in Jordan, he told police.

The complainant received a call some days later, and the caller, who identified himself as Amit, said he was speaking on behalf of Leonie who was at the Delhi International Airport.

She was carrying $70,000 and had been stopped by immigration authorities, and urgently needed Rs 24,000 to get clearance, Amit told the complainant.

If the complainant deposited money in her account she will return it in due course, Amit said.

The complainant deposited the money. But he kept receiving calls over the next three months with request to deposit more money on various pretexts, police said.

The complainant ended up paying Rs 9.4 lakh before he realised that something was wrong, he told police.

He tried to contact the woman as well as Amit, but their numbers were switched off, police said.

Finally he decided to lodge a complaint.

Police have registered a case under IPC section 420 (cheating) and under the Information Technology Act against unidentified persons and further probe is on.

Noida, Jul 28: A doctor admitted at a private hospital in Noida has been accused of sexually harassing a patient in his isolation ward, where both were undergoing treatment for COVID-19, the police said.

The 20-year-old woman, in her complaint to the police, alleged that the incident took place on Monday and based on that a case was filed at the local expressway police station, they said.

A senior police official said an investigation is underway and there might be lapses on part of the hospital which allegedly admitted a man and a woman in the same isolation ward, in violation of the norms.

The woman and the doctor had tested positive for coronavirus last week, according to officials.

"The woman was in the isolation ward of the private hospital. There was a man, a medical practitioner, who too was infected with coronavirus and was sharing the ward with her," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Noida, Ranvijay Singh said.

He said the woman alleged molestation and upon being informed, the police immediately lodged a case and initiated a probe into the matter.

"There appears to be some irresponsibility on part of the hospital too. We are communication with the medical departments to check whether the patients were being kept in accordance with the guidelines," Mr Singh said.

He said the accused is still in isolation but the police will reach out for his statement following due protocols of COVID-19.

"All necessary action will be taken as per the truth that will emerge after a thorough investigation," Mr Singh said.

Panipat, Mar 3: A 22-year-old man was charred to death after he came in contact with a live electricity wire while posing for a TikTok video near the Matlaudha railway station here, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday evening when Vikas, a resident of Dharamgarh village, climbed a pole over which the wire was passing and posed for the video, police said.

His three friends were standing below when the accident took place.

Vikas came in contact with the wire carrying 25,000 volts current and was burnt, police said.

Police have sent the body for a post-mortem and started investigation into the matter.

Jun 5: A young woman was forced to drink liquor allegedly by her husband after which he along with four friends assaulted, burnt her with cigarette butts and raped her in front of her five year-old son, police said on Friday.

All the five, who were taken into custody earlier, have been arrested. The shocking incident occurred in the state capital last night.

The incident came to light after the 25-year-old woman, approached police and complained against her husband and his four friends.

A case has been registered against the five accused for kidnapping, assaulting and gangrape.

Since the incident took place in front of the child, a case under Protection of children from sexual offices Act has also been charged against the accused.

Meanwhile, State health and family welfare minister K K Shailaja asked the state police chief to take stringentction against the culprits as "such cruelty happened in front of her child."

The Kerala State Women's Commission on its own registered a case and sought report from the Thiruvananthapuram Rural SP.

She managed to escape from there and pleaded for help from a young man, who saw in heran inebriatedstate, and took her to her house and informed police.

The man later told some television channels that she was crying, had injuries on her face and pleaded for help.

Police have recorded the statement of the woman, who was admitted to a government hospital here and later discharged.

She had also stated that the men had tortured her using cigarette butts.
