Murder accused arrested after 16 years in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Aug 7: A murder accused absconding for 16 years was arrested after a long hunt by the special task force in the district, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, Devendra was arrested on Tuesday for the involvement in the murder of eight people in 2003, police said.

In 2003, Devendra and three other men had killed eight people over an old enmity at Butrada village under Babri police station in Shamli district, they said.

While the other three accused are serving life terms, Devendra was on a run after committing the crime and carried a reward of Rs 12,000, police said.

Nagpur, Apr 5: A 23-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in Imambada area in Nagpur on Saturday due to financial distress, police said.

Nikhil Gavhane, who worked in a grocery shop, hanged himself as he had taken money from a person and was stressed over repayment, an official said.

"He was depressed since a week," the Imambada police station official said.

Mathura, Jul 22: A local court in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura on Wednesday sentenced 11 policemen, including the then Deputy Superintendent of Police, to life imprisonment in a case pertaining to the murder of royal Raja Man Singh in 1985.

District Judge Sadhana Rani Thakur announced the life imprisonment sentence a day after holding them guilty of the killing. Three policemen were, however, acquitted. Four men died during the trial.

The policemen were convicted under Section 302 (murder), 148 (rioting) and 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the Indian Penal Code.

The verdict comes 35 years after Man Singh was killed. He, along with two others, was shot dead in police firing a day after he crashed his jeep into the then Rajasthan Chief Minister Shiv Charan Mathur's helicopter in a fit of anger.
