Udupi, Jan 16: Renovated with sustainable eco-friendly features by the Bearys Group, the Badriya Jum’a Masjid of Kodi in Kundapur taluk was formally inaugurated by Moulana Sayyed Mohammed Rabey Hasani Nadvi, president, All India Muslim Personal Law Board, in the presence of a galaxy of religious scholars.

Speaking on the occasion he said that a mosque is centre of love, peace and humanity and it spreads the message of peace and brotherhood. He also called upon the Muslims to be harbingers of global peace by following the teachings of Quran and Sunnah.

Applauding Bearys Group for converting Badriya Jum’a Masjid into world’s first ‘zero energy’ eco-friendly green mosque, Maulana Mufti Mohammed Ashraf Ali Baqavi, principal of Darul Uloom Sabeelur Rashad, said that people of Kodi now bear the responsibility to spread peace and brotherhood through this facility.

Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal, Khazi of Udupi district, CMD, Bearys Group, UT Khader, Minister for Health and Family Welfare were present among others.

The mosque design has integrated Islamic architecture and sustainable technologies. The important feature of this green building is that its entire energy requirement is met through hybrid renewable energy, both wind and solar.

80 year old mosque

Mr Beary said that the mosque was built by his grandfather 80 years ago. It was renovated 40 years ago and now it was renovated again with eco-friendly measures. “It is our little contribution in India’s march towards sustainable development,” he said and hoped that the mosque will become a holistic place of worship where people from all over the world can come, pray and find true solace.

The mosque, built on 15,000 sqft area, at a cost of Rs 2 crore has come up in a palatial ground accommodating greenery in and around. The cooling of the building is achieved by using elements of nature. The building orientation minimizes solar heat gain.

The ‘L’ shaped building plan and elevated nature of the prayer hall, green vegetation and water tanks around it offer a naturally cooled environment. The solar heat reflecting terrace floor, laid with white China mosaics and fitted with turbo vents, not only keep the prayer space cool, but also reduces warming of local micro climate, he said.

The power consumed is six kilo watts as against the actual requirement of 40 to 50 kilo watts. Its open envelope with sun rays travelling and non-conducting Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) Jallis with over 50 per cent openings, increase natural ventilation.

The natural cooling of the building is accentuated by the wind scoop on 70 foot multifunctional Minaret (from where the Azan, the call for prayer is given) which forces down draft of cool breeze into the prayer hall and also supports the tower structure of wind turbine mounted atop it.

Use of hybrid renewable energy (Wind and solar energy) in the mosque will produce more energy than used by the mosque, thus feeding energy to state grid and accruing (CER) credits for next 25 years.

“Reduce-Reuse-Recycle-Regenerate” technology has been implemented here and it is equipped with “Pressmatic” (Taps with technology that allows only a fixed quantity of water to flow with every press of its knob) water fixtures to conserve precious water, he claimed.

The calligraphy in Arabic, Chinese and Japanese languages on the walls of the mosque is done by Mukhthar Ahmed, the head of Institute of Indo-Islamic Art and culture, Bengaluru. The mosque also accommodates a library.

Bengaluru, Feb 10: Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar on Sunday hit out at the BJP and RSS for taking out a route march in Ramanagara against the controversial Jesus Christ statue.

“Just because the BJP won 25 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, Congress workers need not lose hope. If the Congress and JD(S) had worked out a better strategy, the BJP would not have won even 10 seats. We will correct our mistakes,” the former Congress minister said.

After the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP has failed to do well in assembly polls and has been losing power in many states. People are hitting the streets protesting against its policies such as CAA and NRC, he said.

Accusing the BJP and RSS of not being able to digest Congress’ victory in the Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha segment in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, he said that the BJP is trying hard to make inroads into the constituency represented by his brother D K Suresh. “Let them take out route march, we don’t care,” he said.

“We all know what the BJP did during the Lok Sabha elections, and the media reported how much money they spent in the elections. What was the Election Commission doing? Was the Income Tax Department sitting with its eyes closed? Why did they conduct raids only in Hassan, Shivamogga and Mandya districts,” he asked.

He alleged that false cases were slapped when him and other leaders, including H D Kumaraswamy, Siddaramaiah, G Parameshwara and Dinesh Gundurao.

Bengaluru, Mar 5: At 11 am on Friday, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa will present the State Budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal. Coming at a time when the state is facing financial challenges, the budget is expected to have minor tax shocks for citizens, while making space for big-ticket allocations to the agriculture and water resources ministries. Thursday's budget will be Yediyurappa’s seventh.

“Agriculture is our primary focus. The recent gazette notification of the Mahadayi tribunal order is a welcome move for Karnataka and we will make budgetary allocations for this too,” the CM had said.

The cut back in devolution of funds for Karnataka from the divisible pool, trimming of funds from the Union Government for Centrally-sponsored schemes and tax collections falling short of revenue targets have made matters tough for Yediyurappa. The consolation may be the part payment of one installment of GST compensation from the Centre. The GST compensation, in part for the October-November period, was released to the state in time for tabling of the budget.

Kottayam, Mar 31: A 91-year-old and 88-year-old senior citizen couple were discharged from the isolation ward of government medical college after getting treated from COVID-19 on Monday.

"It is a testimony to the dedication and expertise of the medical staff as well as the strength of the Kerala public health system. We shall overcome," Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac tweeted as he praised the healthcare services for treating the elderly couple considered as highly vulnerable to the contagious virus.

Apart from the two senior citizens, five others suffering from COVID-19 have also been treated and discharged from the hospital.
Thomas, 91, and his wife Mariyamma, 88, who were under treatment at the Kottayam Medical College were already suffering from various age-related problems. The 91-year-old had a heart attack and severe breathing trouble when he was under treatment.

"The aged couple based in Ranni in Pathanamthitta district had got infected with the virus after coming into contact with their son, wife and grandson who had arrived from Italy. COVID-19 was confirmed in them on March 8. They were admitted to Pathanamthitta hospital. However, they were shifted to the Medical College in Kottayam the very next day as their condition was critical," the Kerala government said.

The family will have to remain in home-quarantine for 14 more days.

The Union Health Ministry said the death toll due to COVID-19 has risen to 32 and the number of total coronavirus cases to 1,251 as on Monday.

There are 1117 active cases in the country with the state of Kerala contributing the highest number of cases which stands at 202.
