In Muzaffarnagar, Muslim voters face new set of challenges

April 3, 2014

MuzaffarnagarMuzaffarnagar, April 3: The Lok Sabha election has thrown up a new set of challenges for Muslim voters in riot-hit Muzaffarnagar. After facing the brunt of the violence, they are confused and divided over their choice.

For Liaquat Ali and Meharban Raza, both Khatauli-based social workers, communal harmony tops the list. “We have lived with Hindus as brothers, the harmony we lost during the September 2013 riots should be restored soon,” they said. Both agreed that the Muslims were equally drawn towards the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and the Congress, which pitch for secularism.

Voters appear sore at sitting MP Quadir Rana, who has been fielded again by the BSP, for having done little for the district for the past five years. They are also unhappy with Mr. Rana for not acting to stop the riots that claimed the lives of at least 63 people.

Rahis Ahmed and Abdul Aziz, both graduates running shops in Muzaffarnagar, said voters were looking for a candidate who would rehabilitate refugees, still living in temporary shelters in villages between Budhana and Tapur.

Virendra Singh, a former minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal MLA, fielded by the SP, appears to be losing ground as the feeling is that the Akhilesh Yadav government didn’t act swiftly to stop the riots nor did it do enough to rehabilitate victims.

A seasoned politician, Mr. Singh has been trying to convince Muslim voters that it was the SP government that has worked for their welfare. Congress candidate Pankaj Aggarwal, who is Muzaffarnagar Municipal Corporation chairman, hopes to garner votes taking the issue of reservation to Hindu and Muslim Jats. The party has a seat sharing arrangement with Ajit Singh’s RLD, a powerful Jat leader in the region. RLD leaders, including Choudhary Mushtaq, are actively going around villages seeking vote for the Congress nominee.

The BJP’s Sanjeev Baliyan, who supported victims during the riots, is confident of a win.

“My welfare activities during and after the riots and the Modi wave should see me through,” he said while returning from a door-to-door campaign in Jansatt.

However, Ashraf Kazmi of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind in Charthawal, laments that parties were trying to woo the riot-hit only for votes and none was bothered about their welfare. He added that none of the candidates has any roadmap in place to rehabilitate the victims, if voted to power.

Nagpur, Feb 21: Former Maharashtra chief minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Friday condemned AIMIM leader Waris Pathan's reported remarks that 15 crore Muslims are more than a match for the country's 100 crore Hindus, and asked the latter not to mistake the majority community's tolerance for weakness.

Pathan has been widely condemned for reportedly stating that "15 crore hain lekin 100 crore pe bhari hain".

He purportedly made these comments while addressing an anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act rally in Kalaburagi in north Karnataka on February 16. The AIMIM leader has claimed he was quoted out of context.

Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Fadnavis demanded an apology from Pathan and asked the Uddhav Thackeray government to take action.

"We condemn the statement made by Waris Pathan and demand an apology. In case he does not apologise, the state government must take action against him," he said.

Fadnavis said Pathan should understand that minorities were safe and enjoyed full freedom in India because 100 crore Hindus live in the country.

He said no one would dare utter such a statement in a Muslim-majority nation, adding that the "Hindu community is tolerant but its tolerance should not be mistaken for weakness".

"Pathan should apologise to the nation and the Hindu community," he said.

Lucknow, Feb 14: Uttar Pradesh doctor Kafeel Khan was on Friday booked under the National Security Act (NSA) over his alleged anti-CAA speech at Aligarh Muslim University on December 12, 2019.

The Uttar Pradesh slapped NSA on Kafeel Khan on Friday even as the doctor waited to be released from jail despite being granted bail on Monday in connection with his alleged inflammatory speech.

SP Crime Dr Arvind said that there were sufficient grounds to book the doctor under NSA.

The suspended pediatrician, Kafeel Khan, was arrested for allegedly delivering a controversial speech during Anti-CAA protests on December 12 at the Aligarh Muslim University or AMU. While he was granted bail on Monday, his family members claimed on Thursday that he was yet to be released.

Dr Kafeel Khan's brother Adeel Ahmed Khan had issued a statement saying that despite being granted bail Mathura jail authorities had not honoured the court's order.

Dr Kafeel Khan was arrested by the UP Special Task Force from Mumbai on January 29 for participating anti-CAA protest at AMU. A case was registered against him at the Civil Lines police station here for promoting enmity between different religions.

After his arrest in Mumbai, Dr Khan was brought to Aligarh, from where he was shifted to the district jail in neighbouring Mathura.

According to police, this was done as a precautionary measure in view of the anti-CAA protests on the AMU campus and at the Eidgah grounds in the old city. Police had said that the Dr Khan's presence in the Aligarh jail could have aggravated the law and order situation in the city.

The doctor was earlier arrested for his alleged role in the death of over 60 children in one week at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur in August 2017. Short supply of oxygen at the children's ward was blamed at that time for the deaths.

About two years later, a state government probe cleared Khan of all major charges, prompting him to seek an apology from the Yogi Adityanath government.
