‘My Beat My Pride’ to strengthen beat policing in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Aug 16: The Mangaluru city police commissionerate has launched a new initiative ‘My beat My pride’ (MBMP) today to strengthen the beat policing system under its jurisdiction.

Commissioner of Police Dr P S Harsha the MBMP system is unique and all senior officers, including the city police commissioner, will participate in beat policing along with the designated beat constable, to get first-hand information from the public.

The city police commissioner himself engaged in beat duty in beat number 7 of Mangaluru North Police Station from Kandathpalli Masjid to Mission Compound. Abandoning the official vehicle, he walked along with the beat constable and interacted with the public.

He said the new system strives to empower beat constables and further strengthen the beats. “From the commissioner up to the police sub-inspectors, all will join the beat constables at least once a month in beat policing. This will not only instil a sense of pride in performing the beat duties but will also help the senior officers in familiarising with the ground realities,” Harsha added.

As a result of this project, citizens are expected to get various benefits, like faster delivery of passport verification, job verification and others. It is also expected to reduce visits to police stations as they can follow up the progress of any complaints filed by them through the beat constable.

Harsha said there are 756 beats in Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate jurisdiction. Each beat will have representatives from the civil society who are drawn from all walks of life. A WhatsApp group (with 200 to 250 members) will be floated for the police constable in charge of the beat, police inspector of the concerned police station and a technical moderator from commissioner’s office will be in each group.

Further, the police intend to develop an app for enthusiastic participants so that they can actively participate in the delivery of beat-based police services (non-core areas of policing), thereby help the beat constable. At its conceptual stage, it will have features by which any interested member of civil society can log in and decide the date and time on which he is ready to offer his services towards the betterment of the police services.

Harsha said the central command system of the WhatsApp group will be at the commissioner office, which will collect all the suggestions from the public in the group and report to the commissioner every hour. The group will help the police to share official information among members, which will reach a large number of people in society.

Mangalore, Mar 18: The Dakshina Kannada District Home Guards felicitated social activist and Executive Director of Centre for Integrated Learning, Sachitha Nandagopal at the Home Guards district office to mark the International Women's Day recently.

She was recognised for her achievements and contributions to the society in the field of education, culture and mental health.

Sachitha Nandagopal, a former Head of Department of Journalism at Besant Women's College and Principal of CMR Post Graduate Centre for Media Studies, Bangalore, is the Co-Founder of Centre for Integrated Learning, Mangalore which is an NGO working in the field of alternative education, adding value to the present education system. As a Facilitator in Dance Movement Therapy, she has founded Anveshanam - Centre for Mindfulness and Emotional Wellbeing, an organisation dedicated to addressing mental health issues.

She was honoured by District Commandant, Dakshina Kannada Home Guards, Dr. Muralimohan Chunthar. Senior Home Guard Ramesh Bhandary, Diwakar, Mahesh and lady personnel of Home Guards were present on the occasion.

Once again Bengaluru witnesses massive protest against CAA, NRC, NPR

Bengaluru, Jan 21: A massive protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and National Population Register (NPR) was witnessed at Shivajinagar's Chandni Chowk area on Tuesday.

Scores of people came together carrying national flags and placards to register their protest in the city.

Speaking to ANI, a protester said, "People of all religious community have assembled here in Chandni Chowk to protest against CAA, NRC, and NPR. We the people of India are against this law."

Terming the law as anti-constitutional, he said that we support all the states who oppose the CAA. We demand the revocation of CAA and the government should remove conditions in NPR which lead to NRC.

CAA grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

'No community spread of COVID-19 in Kerala, but threat persists'

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 24: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said that there is no community spread or the expected phase three spread of coronavirus in the state so far but the threat continues.

Speaking to media persons here on Thursday, Vijayan said that Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode, and Malappuram districts will be in the red zone with full restrictions.

"All the other ten districts in the State will be in the orange zone. With the detection of new cases today, the status of Kottayam and Idukki districts have been changed from green to orange. The district administration will decide on the hotspot areas to be closed," he said.

He said there would be an increase in the number of random tests in the red zones.

"In an effort to confirm that there is no community spread in the State, random antibody tests would be conducted among health workers, police personnel, home delivery persons, volunteers and migrant labourers," he added.

The Chief Minister said that COVID-19 labs set up at the Pariyaram Government Medical College at Kannur and the Kottayam Medical College have got the approval from the ICMR for coronavirus testing. The lab at Kannur Medical College will start functioning from Friday.

The UV sterilised lab, spread over 2,200 sq ft is equipped with four real-time PCR machines. In the first phase, this lab will be able to do 15 tests per day, which will be gradually increased to conduct 60 tests in the next phase.

"With the opening of these two new labs, tests to detect COVID-19 will be conducted in 14 government labs in Kerala. Apart from this, there are two private labs also in Kerala which are doing these tests. Since the number of coronavirus cases is again increasing in the State, the government has decided to procure ten real-time PCR machines to ramp up testing," he added.
