Jun 4: The heady profusion of modern gymnasiums, be it at home, office or elsewhere, has made workouts a rage, but exercising without a proper training regime and guidance can take a toll on your health, and even be fatal, warn experts.gym

A recent incident of a young software engineer in Kolkata dying after falling from the treadmill has only highlighted the risks of unmonitored workouts and over-exercise. According to fitness experts, a trainer must have a questionnaire regarding the client’s medical history and pre-training assessment to find out how far the person can push himself or herself.

“A person who is clueless about fitness, needs to have a fitness trainer who can fix a ‘goal of training’ for him. If somebody with a back or a joint pain wishes to lose weight and the trainer, unaware of his illness, puts him into a high intensity workout regime, the pain will only aggravate,” says Chinmoy Roy, a fitness trainer with the National Cricket Academy.

“A questionnaire and a pre-training assessment by the trainer should do the trick. It should ask if the person has any metabolic issues like diabetes or blood pressure, cardiac issues or joint pains because in case he suffers from any of these complications, the exercise and its intensity will be completely different,” he explained.

Citing the example of Cameroon footballer Marc-Vivien Foe who died of cardiac arrest while playing for his country in the Confederations cup in 2003, the physio said though death during exercise is a rare occurrence, every such incident should act as a wake-up call for everybody.

Some experts rue that most of the gyms lack certified trainers and a flexible client-specific fitness module. “I believe a fitness trainer should at times have a better understanding of anatomy than a doctor. A doctor is not asking you to pick up a hundred kg weight, but the trainer is. So he should know his job very well. However, more than 90% of the fitness trainers in city gyms lack proper certifications,” said noted fitness trainer Ranadeep Moitra.

While stating that certifications for fitness trainers have started in India, Moitra argued that theoretical knowledge is often not enough. “It’s good that some private organisations have started certain initiatives to train the fitness instructors. However, in a majority of cases, certification only involves clearing a theoretical exam,” he claimed.

Strongly criticising the random use of steroids in fitness training, Moitra said the onus is both on the trainers and the trainees. “The onus is also on the trainees. Today, people are using steroids just to look good in a night club. They are running behind outer beauty rather than inner strength. This mindset has to change,” Moitra said.

According to doctors, unaccustomed physical activity without any prior conditioning can lead to extreme consequences like sudden cardiac death. “Therefore, a trainer should guide you through these kinds of fitness training regimes. People should first condition their body for physical activities and gradually increase the level of exercise,” according to cardiologist Sushan Mukhopadhyay of Kolkata’s Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals.

To avoid serious health issues, the fitness centres should teach their trainers basic life-support therapy and provide them a shock defibrillator, if possible. “It is a must for people working as fitness trainers to be aware of basic life-support therapy so that they can do a basic cardiac massage,” said Mukhopadhyay.

“In nearly 50% of the cases of sudden cardiac deaths, the patients can be revived by giving shock treatment. Therefore. a shock defibrilator can be of good use in emergency situations,” he added.

Panaji, May 11: Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, most of the people are more concerned about the health of their near and dear ones than their own well-being, says a study conducted by a leading business school in Goa.

People are now more conscious about any bodily changes, and even mild cold, cough and sneezing, it says.

The study, on public's reaction towards COVID-19 outbreak by gauging their psychological response in terms of anxiety and their coping behaviour, was conducted by the Goa Institute of Management's Dr Divya Singhal and Prof Padhmanabhan Vijayaraghavan.

It took into account inputs from 231 respondents residing in various parts of the country.

"Nearly 82.25 per cent of the respondents were more worried about the health of their loved ones than their own well-being," Singhal said.

"Majority of the respondents have become conscious of any bodily changes, sensations, a mild cold, cough, sneezing and experience concern, and attribute those changes to the symptoms of COVID-19," she said.

Besides, more than 50 per cent of the respondents said their social media usage has gone up as well as their time spent on watching movies and shows through online medium, the official said.

The respondents agreed that their technology usage to connect with friends and relatives has gone up, she said.

The study also indicated that a large group of respondents found it "depressing" to read forwarded messages on the deadly disease.

"An overwhelming majority of the respondentsagreed that they discourage unverified forwarded messages about COVID-19 on social media," says the study.

It also found that 41 per centof the respondents were not doing any physical activity, like yoga, during the lockown period, while another 19 per cent were not sure about engaging themselves in physical activities.

Besides, 57 per cent of the respondents were not engaged in any mind-calming practices like meditation, and 18 per cent were not sure about taking up meditative practices, the study said.

The respondents included 145 men and 86 women, aged 18 and above, with nearly 60 per cent of them residing in non- metro cities and rest from metros.

About 47.62 per cent of the respondents were employed in private or government sectors, and the remaining included students, retired persons and homemakers.

New York, May 19: Cigarette smoke spurs the lungs to make more of the receptor protein which the novel coronavirus uses to enter human cells, according to a study which suggests that quitting smoking might reduce the risk of a severe coronavirus infection.

The findings, published in the journal Developmental Cell, may explain why smokers appear to be particularly vulnerable to severe COVID-19 disease.

"Our results provide a clue as to why smokers who develop COVID-19 tend to have poor clinical outcomes," said study senior author Jason Sheltzer, a cancer geneticist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in the US.

"We found that smoking caused a significant increase in the expression of ACE2, the protein that SARS-CoV-2 uses to enter human cells," Sheltzer said.

According to the scientists, quitting smoking might reduce the risk of a severe coronavirus infection.

They said most individuals infected with the virus suffer only mild illness, if they experience any at all.

However, some require intensive care when the sometimes-fatal virus attacks, the researchers said.

In particular, they said three groups have been significantly more likely than others to develop severe illness -- men, the elderly, and smokers.

Turning to previously published data for possible explanations for these disparities, the scientists assessed if vulnerable groups share some key features related to the human proteins that the coronavirus relies on for infection.

First, they said, they focused on comparing gene activity in the lungs across different ages, between the sexes, and between smokers and nonsmokers.

The scientists said both mice that had been exposed to smoke in a laboratory, and humans who were current smokers had significant upregulation of ACE2.

According to Sheltzer, smokers produced 30-55 per cent more ACE2 than their non-smoking counterparts.

While the researchers found no evidence that age or sex impacts ACE2 levels in the lungs, they said the influence of smoke exposure was surprisingly strong.

However, they said, the change seemed to be temporary.

According to the data, the level of the receptors ACE2 in the lungs of people who had quit smoking was similar to that of non-smokers.

The study noted that the most prolific producers of ACE2 in the airways are mucus-producing cells called goblet cells.

Smoking is known to increase the prevalence of such cells, the scientists said.

"Goblet cells produce mucous to protect the respiratory tract from inhaled irritants. Thus, the increased expression of ACE2 in smokers' lungs could be a byproduct of smoking-induced secretory cell hyperplasia," Sheltzer explained.

However, Sheltzer said other studies on the effects of cigarette smoke have shown mixed results.

"Cigarette smoke contains hundreds of different chemicals. It's possible that certain ingredients like nicotine have a different effect than whole smoke does," he said.

The researchers cautioned that the actual ACE2 protein may be regulated in ways not addressed in the current study.

"One could imagine that having more cells that express ACE2 could make it easier for SARS-CoV-2 to spread in someone's lungs, but there is still a lot more we need to explore," Sheltzer said.

Washington D.C, Feb 10: Children's vulnerability towards depression, anxiety, impulsive behaviour, and poor cognitive performance could be determined by considering the hours of sleep they manage to get.

Sleep states are active processes that support the reorganisation of brain circuitry. This makes sleep especially important for children, whose brains are developing and reorganising rapidly.

In a study by researchers from the University of Warwick -- recently published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry -- cases of 11,000 children aged between 9 and 11 years from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development dataset were analyzed to find out the relationship between sleep duration and brain structure.

The study was carried out by researchers Professor Jianfeng Feng, Professor Edmund Rolls, Dr. Wei Cheng and colleagues from the University of Warwick's Department of Computer Science and Fudan University.

Measures of depression, anxiety, impulsive behaviour and poor cognitive performance in the children were associated with shorter sleep duration. Moreover, the depressive problems were associated with short sleep duration one year later.

The reduced brain volume of areas such as orbitofrontal cortex, prefrontal, and temporal cortex, precuneus, and supramarginal gyrus was found to be associated with the shorter sleep duration.

Professor Jianfeng Feng, from the University of Warwick's Department of Computer Science, comments: "The recommended amount of sleep for children 6 to 12 years of age is 9-12 hours. However, sleep disturbances are common among children and adolescents around the world due to the increasing demand on their time from school, increased screen time use, and sports and social activities."

A previous study showed that about 60 per cent of adolescents in the United States receive less than eight hours of sleep on school nights.

Professor Jianfeng Feng further added: "Our findings showed that the total score for behavior problems in children with less than 7 hours sleep was 53 per cent higher on average and the cognitive total score was 7.8 per cent lower on average than for children with 9-11 hours of sleep. It highlights the importance of enough sleep in both cognition and mental health in children."

Professor Edmund Rolls from the University of Warwick's Department of Computer Science also commented: "These are important associations that have been identified between sleep duration in children, brain structure, and cognitive and mental health measures, but further research is needed to discover the underlying reasons for these relationships."
