Mudipu, June 12: If at all the kids living in and around Nyupadpu and Harekala area of Dakshina Kannada district can read and write the credit should solely go to this illiterate orange vendor named Harekala Hajabba.

Keeping all his problems aside, Hajabba had dreamt of having a good school in his village itself so as to help the students study nearby school instead of treading a few kilometres in their quest for education.

Though the government had sanctioned a high school, it did not have a school building. Now with the help of the donors and the government, Hajabba has built a school building.

With this, the crusader is not going to rest. Ask him what next? 'PU College' comes the answer.

Hajabba, after shaping up a school for the village single-handedly, now aims at having a PU College for the students wanting to pursue their further studies.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, he said that his dream of having a new school building came true thanks to the help of government and donors.

“I want to start government PU College. I have already submitted memorandum to Chief Minister and MLAs in this regard,” he said. The government had sanctioned high school to the existing primary school in 2007-08 but the school did not have own building.

The classes were held in the primary school classrooms and three batches of students have passed out. At present, as many as 130 students are studying in the high school section of the school. The new building will be inaugurated on June 14.

The programme will be attended by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA U T Khader, ZP President Shailaja Bhat and others. Realising the need for a school in Nyupadpu, the Jamaath in the region started first standard in the madrasa, when Hajappa was the president. Owing to shortage of fund, the school was facing threat of closure.

It was then that Hajabba took up the challenged of raising funds and giving the schools all the facilities required. With the help of the then MLA U T Fareed, Hajabba raised adequate funds and succeeded in purchasing land for the school building.

The high school has six teachers. The school has 1.19 acre land and there is a need to build compound wall around the school.
