Mangalore August 24: A meeting of fishermen and New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), under the chairmanship of Krishna J Palemar, State Ports and Environment Minister, was held in New Mangalore Port here on Tuesday, August 24.

Speaking to mediapersons, Palemar said that mechanized fishermen boats are allowed to enter the New Mangalore Port under emergency situations. He also said that the construction of Kulooru Jetty has pretty much been finalized and the only formality remaining is the Central Ministry's approval.

“The jetty proposal has already been taken up. The blueprint is ready and Rs. 40 lakhs have been spent on survey. We have finalized the budget for the jetty and it has been decided that the Centre will shell out 90% of the expenses and the state government will pay 10% of the total expenditure. The Chairman and Deputy Chairman of New Mangalore Port have agreed and have promised to supply the required materials for the construction”, Palemar revealed.

“The mechanized boats of fishermen were not allowed to enter the New Mangalore Port even during emergency situation. This step was taken to avoid possible terror attacks on the Port. But these measures have cost the fishermen a lot. Till the next board meeting, the mechanized boats will be allowed inside the port under emergency circumstances. The board meeting will commence within one month”, he said.

P Tamilvanan, Chairman, New Mangalore Port, speaking to mediapersons said that the Port handles 22 million tons of oil and 1.6 million tons of LPG, the largest in terms of quantity in the whole country. It therefore becomes difficult for Port authorities to allow the mechanized boats inside, he explained.

The board meeting would be attended by the 17 board members, the Chairman of the Port and fishermen. The board members include personnel from Coast Guards, CSIF, Navy, DC, representatives of Central Government and many other departments, he disclosed.

Ramachandra Baikampady, Chirman, Karnataka Fisheries Development Board, Krishnamurthy, Deputy Chairman, New Mangalore Port, V Ponnuraj, Deputy Comissioner, Mangalore, Shobendra Sasihitlu, President, DK Mogaveera Yuva Vedike, Vasudev Bolar, Secretary Karnataka Mogaveera Kriya Samithi, Nithin Kumar, President, Trawl Boat Union, Naveen Karkera, President, Persuine Boats Union, Coast Guard, CISF, Naveen Manjeshwar, Yathish Baikampady, Umesh Karkera, Devanand, Nagesh Salian, Harishchandra Mendon and many more fishermen were present in the meeting.

Bengaluru, Jan 24: The JD(S) is looking to leverage anti-Citizen (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) sentiment sweeping the country to revive itself and will hold protests in Bengaluru and New Delhi.

The Bengaluru protest is scheduled for Friday. At a meeting of party workers in Bengaluru on Thursday, party patriarch HD Deve Gowda and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy urged the rank and file to participate in the rally to send out a loud and clear message to the BJP.

"The BJP has set out to make Muslims second-grade citizens. India has 40 crore Muslims, can these communal forces eliminate them all?" Gowda said in his address. "We should have the guts to launch a massive protest at Jantar Mantar. We should be prepared to go to jail in the fight against [Prime Minister] Narendra Modi and [Union home minister] Amit Shah."

Gowda said he will lead the rally in Delhi and urged secular parties to unite to take on the BJP. "It is important that regional parties, which share a secular ideology, unite on a common agenda and fight the BJP. Bihar, Kerala and Odisha have said they will not implement CAA. The sentiment is likely to spread to other states," Gowda said.

Kumaraswamy said not only Muslims but many other communities will also bear the brunt of BJP’s "divisive politics". "This pair of Hakka-Bukka [Modi and Shah] is not targeting Muslims alone," he said. "For them, all communities other than upper caste Hindus are inferior Shudras. They will treat even Lingayats, Vokkaligas and Dalits with the same contempt."

The former CM made a special appeal to Lingayats, who generally back the BJP, to stop supporting the saffron party’s caste-oriented politics. "You had appreciated my farm loan waiver scheme and promised support in the elections. But, the results were contrary to that," he said.

The JD(S) passed three resolutions including one to condemn the Centre for enacting CAA. The others were to protest against the Centre’s indifference to the floods in the state and the failed economic policy of the Centre.

Belagavi, Feb 10: In comments that raised eyebrows, Ramesh Jarkiholi, who quit the Congress and joined the BJP and who took oath as minister last week, said his brother Satish has a bright future. The two siblings have rarely seen eye-to-eye — at least in public — in recent times.

He also trained his gun on Congress leader DK Shivakumar, sarcastically thanking the Congress MLA for his meteoric rise. “Had Shivakumar not stood against me, I would not have emerged as a tall leader in the state. I must thank him,” Ramesh said.

The Gokak MLA said Satish of the Congress, the most politically-savvy of the five Jarkiholi siblings, would reach “the top” in his political career. However, he advised him “to inculcate patience and adopt strategies”. “He should make his moves at the right time as timing is very important in politics,” Ramesh said.

He also urged Satish to keep his supporters happy. “Many of his followers are disappointed with his leadership because he does not extend a helping hand to his own people. In the present political climate, people do not endorse a leader who only talks about Buddha and Basava,” Ramesh said.

Ramesh took a dig at Lakan, the youngest sibling, saying, “Lakan speaks ill about me most of the time. He does not understand much. But we brothers are one when it comes to family. We are united when it comes to family matters, but when it comes to politics, we are at loggerheads.”

Assan, Feb 9: Coming down heavily on Amit Shah, JDS supremo HD Deve Gowda said that the Union Home Minister is dreaming of a Hindu nation. Addressing the crowd at an anti-CAA/NRC rally in Hassan, he said that the Home Minister has forgotten that India is a secular, multi-lingual country.

“Shah cannot make India into a Hindu nation. People should come forward and oppose the Acts in the interest of peace and welfare of the nation,” the former PM said, urging secular leaders to unite and fight against the undemocratic policies put forth by the Centre.

“Only secular forces can protect minorities by taking to the streets,” he said. Talking about the controversy around former Union minister Anant Kumar Hegde’s statements, Gowda said BJP leaders are airing anti-national comments, which is disturbing peace. “Muslims, Christians and Hindus should unite to fight against the BJP’s unilateral decisions.”
