Delayed arrival of baggage upsets passengers in Mangalore Airport

Mangalore, September 13: Several irate passengers of the Air India, who arrived here from West Asia a few days ago, gathered at the Mangalore Airport early this morning demanding their luggage.

The passengers, who had arrived from various destinations in West Asia during the last few days, had not been given their baggage as they were yet to arrive from another place.

A passenger told media persons on Sunday said that around 20-25 passengers from different destinations arrived at the airport early that morning seeking response from the Air India officials. G.A. Riyaz Ahmed, a resident of Gandhinagar, Sullia, and his cousin had arrived by a flight from Bahrain last Thursday. He claimed that the airline officials only responded to the disgruntled passengers on Sunday because they got upset with the people having brought the information to the notice of the press.

He said that despite repeated calls, nobody was telling them clearly about when their luggage would be received. “I called everyday and nobody answered the telephone call. We came for the festival and we had no clothes. The same thing happened to many people,” he said.

Asked if he knew why his luggage was delayed, Mr. Ahmed said that he “guessed” that the excess luggage might have been diverted to elsewhere due to festival season. However, he said that no one responded clearly to the questions asked in this regard. Inclement weather

An Air India official, who requested anonymity, told The Hindu that around 40 passengers from several west Asian flights could not get their luggage. He said that this would happen to all airlines when they had to shift the luggage from one flight to another due constraints of weight. “During the festival season, many passengers bring extra luggage, and airlines have to leave behind the excess for another flight,” the official said.

In Mangalore, the monsoon is an added disadvantage, causing flight diversion and misery to passengers. “Because aircraft must carry extra fuel in case the flight gets diverted to another airport due to inclement weather, some of the luggage has to be diverted to another flight,” the official said. As the flight from Bahrain operates only on alternate days, there was more than usual delay in the arrival of luggage from there, the official said. The inclement weather only made things worse, the official said and added that the recent flights from Dubai that arrived on clear days had not faced any problems.

At times like these, the airline staff works extra hours, sorting out luggage overnight and getting a few hours of sleep, the official said.

Mangaluru, Mar 24: With four new coronavirus positive cases reported, surveillance against people coming out of their houses and wandering around in public places has been intensified in the coastal city of Mangaluru today.

With today's addition, the total number of positive cases of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has increased to five in Mangaluru.

All the four new patients are said to be Keralites. Among them three are undergoing treatment at Wenlock Hospital and another one in KMC Hospital.

There will be total restriction in place for the public to step out of their houses. Those who are found outside on the streets would be arrested, caution the district authorities.

Bengaluru, Jun 5: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Thursday said government employees and owners of tractors and other vehicles must return the BPL ration cards immediately, failing which stringent legal action would be initiated against them.

The CM issued directions in this regard to officials as he conducted a review meeting of the Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs department today. Proper supply of ration must be ensured to eligible beneficiaries and action has to be taken to prevent misuse of the facility by those not eligible, Yediyurappa was quoted as saying by his office in a release.

Nearly 63,000 ration cards were cancelled before the COVID-19 outbreak, he noted and directed officials to initiate a campaign to cancel all illegal ration cards. "this campaign would help in curtailing the financial burden on the State's reserves," he added.

In the backdrop of coronavirus pandemic, both the Central and State governments have distributed sufficient quantities of ration, and about 95 percent ration cardholders have availed the benefit, the release said. Under the Chief Ministers Anila Bhagya Scheme, 98,079 beneficiaries have been given 3 gas cylinders free of cost, it said.

Bengaluru, May 29: A cost-effective state of the art glove box testing booth for swab collection was inaugurated by Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar at Victoria hospital.

Inaugurating the specially designed booth for safer, easier and quicker testing, Medical Education Minister Dr Sudhakar said that the portable booths can be used at border check posts and hot spots.

"The testing method involves the collection of samples from inside a box of aluminium and glass. The suspected corona virus-infected individual, whose samples are being taken, has to walk up to the booth and stand in front of the glass exterior. The healthcare worker inside the kiosk collects the sample and then, follows the sanitisation process before proceeding to take the next sample. The collection process, fully contactless, gets over in five minutes," the Minister said.

Dr Sudhakar also said: "This booth significantly reduces manpower requirement and the need for PPE kits. The main advantages of this procedure are that it needs fewer healthcare workers and strictly adheres to the norms of social distancing. 

The booth is low-cost. Each model costs about Rs 15,000-20,000."
It is also portable and can be mounted on a vehicle and transported to any location.

It can be particularly useful for collecting samples in hot spots and border checkpoints, he added.
