Customs officer hangs self

Mangalore, January 31: A customs officer ended his life at his residence near Kadri Road here on Sunday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Shivaprasad (45), a native of Puttur, who was working as Customs Superintendent in the city since past five years.

Police sources said that Shivaprasad took this extreme step after entering his bedroom in the pretext of taking rest.

“At around 4 pm, he went to his bedroom saying that he wants to take rest. When the family members went into the room to check at around 5:30 pm, they found him hanging from the ceiling fan,” the police said quoting one of the family members.

Shivaprasad is survived by his wife and two sons. Police are of the suspicion that he might have committed suicide out of frustration.

Kadri police have registered a case.

Bengaluru, Apr 19: The Karnataka government on Saturday ordered 2 lakh Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits from DHB Global and 1 lakh from other major pharmaceuticals, for the healthcare warriors treating coronavirus patients.

According to the State Health Department, these PPEs have 10 components as per global standards like a face mask to prevent healthcare professional from any liquid sprays, goggles for additional safety, N95 masks for protection of nasal and mouth areas, surgical masks, nitrile gloves, coverall suit, shoe cover, waste disposable bag, plastic apron, and protective gear.

Each of the products should have the relevant certificate from the Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) or equivalent certification.

Mangaluru, Apr 28: Trucks carrying fish loads from Kerala will not be allowed to enter Dakshina Kannada district as the authorities are not being able to control the rush in markets, state Fisheries Minister and district-in-charge Kota Srinivas Poojary said Monday.

The deputy commissioner has been instructed to restrict the entry of fish transport vehicles from outside the district forthwith, in view of the difficulty in maintaining social distancing at the markets identified in the district, the minister told reporters here.

The coastal district has to take more precautionary measures to fight COVID-19 as the number of positive cases have risen in the last couple of days, he said.

Hubballi, Jan 11: Karnataka Industries Minister Jagadeesh Shatter's mother Basvennamma Shivappa Shetter passed away here on Friday evening.

She was 86. She is survived by three sons and a daughter.

The final rituals was held on Saturday, family sources said.
