Rationalist outfit leader slams Yeddyurappa

Mangalore, February 4: President of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations Narendra Nayak has regretted that Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa “is becoming more and more superstitious day by day.”


In a statement here, Mr. Nayak said the Chief Minister had been visiting temples, maths and a number of other places which supposedly have supernatural powers.


“This mania has now reached a stage where he is scared of the new moon day, and it is now said that he is observing some new rituals … to ward off the ill-effects of some black magic done on him, as advised by his favourite astrologer.” Stating that Mr. Yeddyurappa had come to power by “allegedly using occult powers” and was now accusing others of resorting to the same to unseat him, Mr. Nayak said by observing new rituals he was demonstrating that he was unfit to occupy the position of Chief Minister of a State like Karnataka — software capital of the world and home to many premier institutes of science.


“He has, perhaps, forgotten that he is the constitutional authority of the executive in the State and is bound to go by its provisions,” he said.

Dubai: The father of a 16-year old girl who came on a visit visa to the UAE to visit him is desperate for help as she has been hospitalised, even as he has been rendered jobless.

On February 6, Amber D’Couto flew into Dubai from Mangaluru, India, along with her older sister, Alison, 19. The girls wanted to visit their dad Vivian D’Couto who was working in an automobile company at Jebel Ali.

The father was overjoyed to meet his girls until things took an ugly turn.

Two months into her stay, Amber fell seriously ill, even as D’Couto was served a termination letter by his company.

D’Couto said his daughter, a Grade 10 student, was perfectly healthly but suddenly developed high fever and began vomiting. She was rushed to a private hospital in Qusais which could not accommodate her because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation.

On April 30, she was admitted to another private hospital in the same area. After testing negative for COVID-19 thrice, she was diagnosed with acute pancreatis and Rheumatoid fever.

While the girl remains in hospital, the bill has spiralled to over Dh50,000, D’Couto said, adding that without a job now, he had no means to pay the huge amount.

“Amber is a very sweet child and a very bright student. She was living a very healthy life prior to coming to Dubai. But she is so ill now and under round-the-clock vigil in the ICU. The treatment for her condition is very specific and costly.”

A worried man, he said: “My daughter was on a visit visa and she had no insurance. We appeal to compassionate people to help us out in this difficult hour. Due to the current situation, I have lost my job and I am unable to pay for her medical expenses. Her condition has not stabilised yet and I am taking each day as it comes. I trust the doctors to help her recover, and we hope to be repatriated to India at the earliest so she can get further medical care.”

Bengaluru, May 4: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has said that the free bus service for migrant workers has been extended by two days in the state.
 
The service was supposed to end on Tuesday, but it has now been extended till Thursday.
 
The Chief Minister has appealed to workers and other people that they can return to their hometowns without having to gather in large numbers at bus stops.
 
He said, "951 KSRTC buses on Sunday were provided in the state for the travel of migrants. About 1,500 passengers have already gone in 50 busses."
 
On Saturday, an estimated 16,500 passengers in 550 buses left for their homes.
 
On Monday two trains will leave for Rajasthan and Bihar, the Chief Minister said.
 
He said in a press release that everyone will be provided with free meals and water before the journey.

Mangaluru, Mar 27: Amid fear of coronavirus spread, the District Collector on Friday ordered the closure of the city’s major fishing area Dhakke.

''The fish caught by us on Wednesday were dumped, without being sold'', fishermen said. Meanwhile, a few them obtained police permission and took the fish to the nearby fish mill.

All the boats which had gone for fishing are back to the dock and the port is deserted. Also, the fishermen who went fishing have been advised to return.
