Mangalore, February 5: District In-charge minister Krishna J Palemar on Saturday assured media persons that he has directed the district administration to take appropriate measures against the officials of Melanthabettu post office, where Dalits are allegedly being denied entry.

When a group of journalists enquired the minister what measures he is going to take against the post office officials, who allegedly violated the rights of Dalits, he replied that he has urged the district administration to immediately book a case against the accused if the allegations were true.

Recently the Dalits of Melanthabettu, a village located about 6 km away from Belthangady in Dakshina Kannada district voiced against the casteism being practiced in their village post office.

Revealing the cruel story of mistreatment by the officials to the media persons, elderly Dalits of the village have said that they were forced to carry out transactions from outside because they know that if they entered into the office they will be thrown out because of their caste!

“Even if they want to collect their due pension, they have to wait outside the office, often in the hot son. After a long time the officials will come outside and give them money or give it to someone else who hands it over to them,” said a social activist, on condition of anonymity.

“Although Dalits constitute nearly half the population in the village, they are leading a disgraceful life. If they try to enter the post office, the officials block the door”, he lamented.

The post office is located in the Gumpoli area of Melanthabettu in a separate building on the residential premises of the postmaster.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav said that he has already issued a notice to the postmaster demanding an appropriate answer to the allegations.

Promising that strict action will be taken against the officials if they allegations are proved to be true, Yadav said that a team is being formed to investigate the issue thoroughly.

The United States of America has bought almost the entire world's supply of remdesivir, one of just two drugs proven to treat COVID-19.

“President Trump has struck an amazing deal to ensure Americans have access to the first authorised therapeutic for Covid-19,” said the US health and human services secretary, Alex Azar.

“To the extent possible, we want to ensure that any American patient who needs remdesivir can get it. The Trump administration is doing everything in our power to learn more about life-saving therapeutics for Covid-19 and secure access to these options for the American people.”

The announcement implies that no other country in the world will be able to buy remdesivir for next three months at least.

The anti-viral drug patented by the US-based Gilead biotech firm is the only one approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to treat patients with the novel coronavirus.

The Trump administration has already shown that it is prepared to outbid and outmanoeuvre all other countries to secure the medical supplies it needs for the US.

“They’ve got access to most of the drug supply [of remdesivir], so there’s nothing for Europe,” said Dr Andrew Hill, senior visiting research fellow at Liverpool University.

Remdesivir, the first drug approved by licensing authorities in the US to treat Covid-19, is made by Gilead and has been shown to help people recover faster from the disease.

The first 140,000 doses, supplied to drug trials around the world, have been used up. The Trump administration has now bought more than 500,000 doses, which is all of Gilead’s production for July and 90% of August and September.
