Census will focus on women

Mangalore, February 8: Don't get irritated if enumerators, who knock at your doors for the 20-day census from Wednesday, ask women members of your family too many questions. They may ask many questions to find out about differently-abled persons, if any. This is because the 2011 Census this time is focused more on women and differently-abled persons.


Enumerators will ask specific questions on economic activities of women, their places of birth, religion, reasons for migration and surviving and dead children. They will ask the religion of husband and wife separately. A.S. Diwakar, Nodal Officer for Census in Dakshina Kannada, told presspersons here on Monday that the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner had issued specific guidelines to this effect.


One of the guidelines said: “If a woman says she is a non-worker or a housewife, you should not straightaway record her as a non-worker. Probe to find out if she is simultaneously engaged in any economically productive work. Women are often engaged in unpaid, but economically productive work.” It said that in case of women, the primary reason for migration need not only be marriage or moving with household. Probe to record correctly the reasons for migration.


It asked enumerators to sensitively probe for infants, including girls who were born alive but later died, as these births and deaths were often not reported.


The guidelines said the religion of all members of a household might not always be the same. Hence each member, including women, should be asked about it. It said that mother tongue of each member of the household could be different, especially that of married women and domestic help in the household. Regarding recognising differently-abled persons, it said that many disabilities were not visible. Mr. Diwakar said that the Government wanted to know how many people were disabled in the country. It was to provide them required facilities.

Bengaluru, Apr 2: About 1,500 people from Karnataka might have attended the Tablighi Jamaat event in Nizamuddin in the national capital between March 8 to 20. Of these, the State has been able to trace 800 people.
 
Of the 800 persons, 143 people have been found to be symptomatic.
 
Mr Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary (Health and Family Welfare), in a statement here on Thursday said that the Centre had sent the list of 1,500 people to the State.
 
“We cannot say if all these have attended the congregation. Some of them may have attended and some may be the contacts of those who have attended. We have been able to trace 800 from the list and samples of 143 symptomatic persons have been sent for tests."

Kalaburagi, Mar 25: Three coronavirus suspect persons who did not stay home during their mandatory 14-day quarantine period had first information report (FIRs) booked against them in police stations in Kalaburagi town in Karnataka.   

The district administration took this action after it came to know that the three pesons were mingling in the public despite being told to stay home to avoid passing on the coronavirus.

Cases have been booked against them under IPC sections 188 and 271, deputy commissioner B Sharath said.

Stringent action would be taken against them, he said, for not only threatening the health of their family members but society at large.

“The administration will stop at nothing to safeguard public health in this time of emergency,” Sharath said.

People moving around on motorbikes without a proper reason will have their bikes seized. Prohibitory order under Section 144 of CrPC will remain in force until further orders, he said.

Mangaluru, May 27: Mangaluru MLA U T Khader today urged Dakshina Kannada MP and Karnataka BJP chief Nalin Kumar Kateel to pave the way for immediate repatriation of Mangalureans stranded across Gulf countries.

The development comes amidst reports that lack of preparedness on part of the authorities concerned in Dakshina Kannada compelled the Centre to delay the operation of repatriation flights from various Gulf to Mangaluru International Airport under Vande Bharat Mission.

Lakhs of people from Mangaluru region (coastal Karnataka) alone are working in middle eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar. Thousands of them are currently stranded thanks to covid-19 lockdown and are helplessly waiting for repatriation.

Speaking to coastaldigest.com, Mr Khader said he already spoke to Mr Kateel and brought to his notice the plight of Mangalureans in Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries. "There are a large number of pregnant women, senior citizens and patients who need immediate repatriation. It is the responsibility of the elected representatives and district administration to pave the way for the repatriation of our people and arrange quarantine facilities for them," he said. 

"Mr Kaeel is not only MP of Dakshina Kannada. He is also the chief of Karnataka's ruling party. Hence, he must play a crucial role in facilitating the return of Kannadigas in general and Mangalureans in particular," Mr Khader said.
