Ravi Poojary's aides in judicial custody

Mangalore, February 8: The four associates of fugitive Ravi Poojary arrested by sleuths of district crime intelligence bureau (DCIB) on Sunday have been remanded to judicial custody for 15 days. The four associates nabbed are Mohammad Ali alias Munna, and Riyaz, residents of Uppala, and Vishwanatha, and Raghunatha, residents of Kulai. Police recovered a 9 mm pistol, 10 live rounds, eight cell phones and a car from the accused.

Police officials familiar with the case said the accused on instruction from Manish Shetty, now lodged in Bangalore jail under directions from fugitives Ravi Poojary and Kari Yogish hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Prabhakar Chowta, a Kasargod based businessman. Chowta, a former Congress ZP member had allegedly tried to take his cut in a extortion deal call made by Ravi Poojary to M T Mohammed, a businessman in Paivalike in Kasargod district.

Poojary, who wanted to teach Chowta a lesson for interfering in his extortion business hired Mohammad Ali, and Riyaz to deal with Chowta or at least send him a strong message and the other two locals to supply the firearm to them. The arrests of the associates of Ravi Poojary has further crippled the fugitives efforts to take control of a thriving extortion racket that the law enforcers in Dakshina Kannada and Kerala have succeeded to keep under tight leash.

Udupi, Jul 7: A hotelier committed suicide by jumping into a well at Hiriadka in Udupi district last evening. 

The deceased is Raghavendra Bhat (48), a resident of Kadiyali and owner of Hotel Shivasagar in Kadiyali.

He had been to his brother's house in Hiriyadka where he resorted to the extreme step. 

He was known for organising tiger dance competitions during Sri Krishnashtami every year.

He had contested the Udupi CMC election from Congress party, but had lost by a few votes. Later he had joined the BJP.

A case has been registered ar Hiriadka police station and investigations are on.

Bengaluru, May 4: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has said that the free bus service for migrant workers has been extended by two days in the state.
 
The service was supposed to end on Tuesday, but it has now been extended till Thursday.
 
The Chief Minister has appealed to workers and other people that they can return to their hometowns without having to gather in large numbers at bus stops.
 
He said, "951 KSRTC buses on Sunday were provided in the state for the travel of migrants. About 1,500 passengers have already gone in 50 busses."
 
On Saturday, an estimated 16,500 passengers in 550 buses left for their homes.
 
On Monday two trains will leave for Rajasthan and Bihar, the Chief Minister said.
 
He said in a press release that everyone will be provided with free meals and water before the journey.

Bengaluru, Jun 23: Karnataka Congress leader and Kanakapura MLA DK Shivakumar said on Monday that in the wake of coronavirus pandemic, people of his assembly constituency have taken a unanimous decision of remaining under voluntary lockdown until July 1.

The decision was taken after he headed a meeting at Kanakapura on Sunday, at the office of Kanakapura Municipality.

"Let us consider the situation after July 1, hold a similar meeting, and take the next decision. It has nothing to do with the state government's mandate. It came to the conclusion that this was a decision that we all voluntarily took," said DK Shivakumar.

DK Shivakumar informed that the merchants have agreed to sell groceries, fruits, vegetables, fennel, meat and other food items from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. only. District authorities, DCs, SPs and hospital representatives have decided the timings of clinics and drug stores.

He further said, "In this self-motivated lockdown, unnecessary driving should be avoided. The social gap must be maintained. No one should be oppressed by anyone."

Member of Parliament DK Suresh, Ravi - Ramanagara District Collector Archana, SP Anoop Shetty, and Kanakapura Planning Authority Chairman Jagannath were also present in the meeting.
