Bhavya Poojary elected President of M'lore Taluk Panchayat

Mangalore, February 10: Bhavya Gangadhara Poojary and Vijayalaxmi Shetty of the BJP were elected President and Vice President of Mangalore Taluk Panchayat by one vote, respectively.

Prabhulinga Kavalikatti, Assistant Commissioner assisted by Vishwanath Poojary, Executive Officer of Taluk Panchayat conducted the elections which were held at the Taluk Panchayat Auditorium here on Thursday.

Both candidates defeated their congress counterparts by bagging 19 votes each. Meanwhile congress candidates secured 18 votes each.

While Congress fielded Surekha Chandrahas for the President's post, Maria Lavina Vegas of the party contested for the post of Vice-President.

Bhavya represents Kalla Mundkuru constituency and Vijayalaxmi represents Ganjimutt.

Speaking to media persons later, Bhavya said that she would try to implement all the government schemes in the Taluk effectively with the cooperation of all concerned. Efforts will be made to solve the problems of title deeds, she promised.

When asked about her candidature, she said, “It was unexpected for me and indeed it was the decision of party leaders”.

Vice President Vijayalaxmi echoed Bhavya's words and stated that she will give priority to drinking water, roads and street lights.

Bhavya Poojary

Bhavya, wife of Gangadhar Poojary, resident of Kalla Mundkur, completed her graduation from the Besant Women's College, Mangalore, High School in Canara High School, Urwa Mangalore and Primary education in Sri Rama Higher Primary School, Konchady.

Vijayalaxmi Shetty

Wife of Booba Shetty and resident of Mogaru Kere in Ganjimutt,Vijayalaxmi Shetty has studied upto 7th standard. She has been the member of Ganjimutt Gram Panchayat three times. She is the President of Ganjimutt Milk Producers Cooperative Society, and the President of Dharmasthala Gramabhivrddi Yojana Okkoota and the President of Dharmasthala Gramabhivrddi Yojana Okkoota Association.

It can be noted that with this election, top posts of Zilla Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat as well as Mangalore City Corporation have all fallen in the kitty of women. The post of President was reserved for general (women) candidate and that of vice-president for candidate from BCM (B) women group respectively.

Mangaluru, Apr 4: About 20,000 quintal boiled rice has been distributed among the ration card holders through Public Distribution System, District-in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said here on Saturday.

As people in the district prefer boiled rice over white rice, the government has given approval for distributing boiled rice. From next month, only boiled rice will be distributed in the district at fair price shops.

In the last two days, rice has been distributed among 61,302 cardholders in the district.

Bengaluru, Apr 5: Fake news spreads faster and more easily nowadays through the internet, social media and instant messaging and such news about the COVID-19 pandemic have been labeled a dangerous “infodemic”.

These messages may contain useless, incorrect or even harmful information and advice, which can hamper the public health response and add to social disorder and division.

Asking people to avoid fake news on COVID-19, Hemant Nimbalkar IPS, IGP and Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration), shared a photo on his Twitter page and wrote, “One Mask For Ear Too"

Mangaluru, Jan 22: Eminent industrialist Dr Mohammed Yusuf has been elected the chairperson of the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf. 

10 members of the Board cast their votes in the election held to the top post today at its office in the city. While Dr Yusuf, who was backed by the Congress, secured six votes, K N M Shafi Sa’adi, who was backed by the BJP, secured only 4 votes.

Addressing reporters, Dr Yusuf said that there was 1.32 lakh acres of Wakf land at the time of Independence. A large number of the properties were lost under various laws, including the Inam Land Abolition Act.

Flanked by Congress MLA Tanveer Sait and Minorities Welfare Dept secretary A B Ibrahim, Dr Yusuf vowed to strive hard to make the Board an example for the entire country. 

74-year-old Dr Yusuf had held the post more than once in the past. A veterinarian, Dr Yusuf had quit the government job and set up business in Bengaluru and Dubai decades ago and has earned considerable success.
