CID officials visit Karwar port

Karwar, February 13: The iron ore theft case at the Karwar port took an interesting turn on Saturday with Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials visiting the port office and the port officer, Capt. C. Swami, not to be found.

Subsequently, the investigating officials pasted a notice on the door of the office, asking Capt. Swami to be present before them with all the necessary documents on Tuesday.


If he fails to do so, it will be presumed that he has nothing to produce before the investigating agency.


The CID officials took over the investigation of the case from the local police on Friday.

In March last, forest officials seized iron ore from the port premises and it was handed over to the Karwar port officer. But in June, forest officials filed an FIR (no. 154/10 under sections of 409 and 379) in the Karwar Town police station alleging that the 50,000 tonnes of iron ore seized by them was “missing” and had been allegedly exported.

Though the Belekeri and Karwar theft cases had come up together, the Belekeri case was handed over to the CID in June last year.

Dilly-dallying

The State Government decided to hand over the Karwar port case to CID after much dilly-dallying.

On Friday, CID officials visited the Karwar port and the port office. They reportedly called Capt. Swami to be present before them . According to sources, Capt. Swami told them on phone that he was available at the office. However, when the CID team visited the office, he was not there. Despite repeated calls, Capt. Swami failed to turn up. Sources close to Swami said that he would present himself before the CID only after getting legal advice.

On Saturday morning, the CID team led by Bheemaih, Superintendent of Police, and N. Mohan Rao and Muddumahadevayya, Deputy Superintendents, visited the port office again and waited for Capt. Swami. When he failed to turn up, a notice was pasted on the door of the office. Mr. Rao is the investigating officer in the case.

Setback

In a related development, the CID suffered a setback in the Belekeri port theft case when a local court rejected the charge sheet produced by the CID. The court said that the charge sheet was not in order and the CID had failed to produce relevant documents.

Bengaluru, May 28: A complaint has been filed against BJP Karnataka state president and Lok Sabha member Nalin Kumar Kateel by the Congress Legislators charging him with issuing false information on Coronavirus to mislead the people.

The complaint was filed by MLCs Ivan D’Souza and Prakash Rathod at Vidhana Soudha police station on Thursday.

In the complaint they had alleged that “Kateel has been spreading false information that the position of World Health Organization’s (WHO) Chairman was given to India in appreciation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s achievement in Coronavirus management. 

In reality, the position was given to India on the basis of rotation. India’s stature gets affected because of such childish statements at the international level.”

Mangaluru, Aug 1: A teenage boy, who was critically injured in a road accident at Manchi village in Bantwal taluk, breathed his last at a private hospital in the city today.

The victim has been identified as Mohammad Unais (17), a resident of Bolanthoor village.  

The mishap occurred yesterday (July 31) at around 6 p.m. when Unais was riding a motorbike.

In his bid to overtake a speeding lorry near the Manchi mosque, the boy lost control over his motorbike, which first rammed into an auto-rickshaw and then collided with the same lorry. 

The impact was such that the boy was thrown onto the road. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru. 

He breathed his last early today without responding to any treatment. 

A case has been registered at jurisdictional Melkar Traffic Police Station and investigations are on.

Jan 14: A day after it moved the Supreme Court against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Kerala government on Tuesday said it would continue its fight against the legislation as it "destroys" the secularism and democracy in the country.

The CPI(M)-led government had on Monday moved the apex court challenging the CAA and sought to declare it as 'ultra vires' of the Constitution. State Industries Minister E P Jayarajan told reporters here that the state has moved the apex court and will explore all options to fight the Act.

"The state government will to go to any extent and continue its fight against CAA. This Act destroys democracy in the country. This will only help in implementing the RSS agenda, to drive the nation through a fascist regime, and destroying the secularism and democracy in the country. The RSS and the Sangh Parivar cannot implement this law just by using muscle power," Jayarajan said.

Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran tweeted that the state became the first in the country to approach the top court against the Act. "Kerala government files lawsuit against the unconstitutional CAA. Kerala becomes the first state in the country to go to the Supreme Court against CAA.

"Kerala leads the way," he said in the tweet. In a suit filed in the apex court, the Kerala government has sought to declare that the CAA 2019 was "violative" of Article 14 (Equality before law), 21 (Protection of life and personal liberty) and 25 (Freedom of conscience and free profession, practice, and propagation of religion) of the Constitution.

It also claimed that the law was violative of the basic principle of secularism enshrined in it. The state Assembly had on December 31, 2019, passed a unanimous resolution against the CAA and became the first state to do it.
