Protest against transfer of Konaje SI held

Mangalore, February 15: Several organizations, political parties and nearly 500 residents of Konaje police limits held a protest on Monday night at Konaje police station against the transfer of Sub Inspector Sunil B Patil.

On Monday, City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh has ordered the transfer of Patil who served for two years as Sub Inspector in Konaje Police Station.

Protesters said that Patil was targeted because he had curbed the illegal sand mining activities in the region.

They threatened that the protest would be intensified at Assaigoli, Mudipu and other places if failed to revoke his transfer.

Former President Bantwal Taluk Panchayat Umar Pajeer, Congress leader Santhosh Shetty led the protesters.

Panambur ACP Puttamadaiah, Mangalore Rural Police Inspector Manjunath rushed to the spot.

Kannur, Jun 21: Customs sleuths on Sunday seized 432 grams of gold worth around Rs 20 lakh from a passenger who arrived at Kannur International Airport from Dubai in Fly Dubai flight, scheduled under Vande Bharat Mission.

Customs Assistant Commissioner E Vikas-led team seized the smuggled gold from the passenger Usman of Malappuram district and detained him, sources said.

The seized gold was kept in his inner-wear.

Mangaluru, Jun 15: A father and his four-year-old son were killed when their motorcycle was hit by a lorry from behind at Bakampady junction on the outskirts of the city.

The Police said the deceased has been identified as Abdul Bhasheer, a resident of Krishnapura and his son Shayan. 

On Sunday evening, Bahseer was going from Mangaluru to Krishnapura by the motorcycle along with wife and son when a speeding lorry "dashed into the motorcycle from behind and knocked them down''.

The four-year-old son died on the spot while Basher and his wife were rushed to the hospital. However, the husband succumbed to injuries at the hospital on Monday. Local police registered a case in this connection.

Bengaluru, May 9: Karnataka government in its latest order has allowed restaurants, pubs and bars to sell liquor at retail prices from May 9 till May 17. The third phase of coronavirus lockdown is slated to end on May 17.

"Karnataka government has allowed restaurants, pubs and bars to sell liquor at retail prices from tomorrow till May 17. However, they can be sold only in take away form," read an order issued by the state government.

Earlier, the government had allowed the opening of liquor shops in order to mobilise revenue. However, bars, pubs, restaurants were ordered to remain close amid the COVID-19 lockdown.

As per the latest update by the State Health Department, the total number of coronavirus cases in the state is 753. "Of 753 cases, 346 are active cases. 376 persons were discharged after treatment while 30 people have succumbed to the coronavirus," the Health Department said in a release.
