Don't charge labourers, APL card holders for medical treatment'

Mangalore, February 15: Despite repeated appeals from Dakshina Kannada district administration to withdraw its decision, the Akhila Bharatha Karmika Sangha (ABKS) on Tuesday launched a continuous day-night silent dharana in front of the Wenlock hospital and Lady Goschen Hospitals against the move to charge labourers and APL card holders seeking treatment at Government Wenlock District Hospital.

The main demands of the protesters include cancelling of medicine and bed fees, providing hot water for bath for pregnant and lady patients, controlling the misappropriation of funds sanctioned by the government, provision of 30 beds in Intensive Care Unit etc.

Speaking to media persons Jalandhar Shetty, City President of ABKS said that the Wenlock hospital which should have been serving the poor patients, has turned into a death zone.

He said most of the staff in both hospitals are not behaving well with the patients.

Meanwhile, the district administration has urged ABKS to give up its continuous silent protest. Earlier, the District Surgeon P Saroja and Superintendent of Lady Goschen held meetings with members of the ABKS and explained to them about the functioning of the two units, which are charging minimum fee for few types of treatment alone as per government orders. The fee is used for hospital development purposes, according to them.

However Shetty said that his Sangha would continue the protest until its demands get fulfilled

Karnataka CM holds meeting with Union Health Ministry officials in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jul 7: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Tuesday held a meeting with a team of officials from the Union Health Ministry in Bengaluru in view of COVID-19 pandemic.

The team of Union Health Ministry officials praised the state's COVID-19 management measures.

Arti Ahuja, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health, EMR director Ravindran met the Chief Minister during a two-day visit to the state. The team praised the State Government's efforts to gather information and identify co-morbid figures for the control of COVID-19.

During the meeting, it was discussed that in the following days, priority should be given to prevent death from COVID-19 and to provide adequate treatment for symptomatic infections.

In addition, Central team officials suggested that the COVID-19 guidelines should be followed in containment zones.

Officials informed about the steps being taken to treat COVID infected people in the state and stated that the High Flow Oxygen System is being implemented in all district hospitals and taluk hospitals in the state. The process will be completed by August 15.

Health Minister B. Sriramulu, Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar, Chief Secretary to Government Vijayabhaskar and other senior officials were present during the meeting.

Darul Uloom Deoband asks Muslims to offer Eid prayers at home

Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh), May 19: Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband has issued a fatwa asking Muslims to offer their Eid prayers this time at home, instead of congregating at mosques.

The directive comes amid a nationwide lockdown to slow down the spread of coronavirus.

Despite the relaxations announced in the lockdown, religious and other large gatherings are still banned.

The fatwa was issued in response to a query put to the seminary, its spokesman Ashraf Usmani said.

The fatwa said the Eid namaz can be offered in the same manner that the Friday prayers are now being read at home.

It said not holding the namaz in the usual manner is pardonable in circumstances such as these.

Shwetha Rasquinha conferred doctorate by Mangalore University

Mangaluru, Jan 2: Shwetha Rasquinha, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Social Work, St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, has been awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by the Mangalore University for her thesis titled “Effectiveness of Social work intervention on caretakers of cancer patients- A social work study in Mangalore”.

She did her studies under the guidance of Dr Rameela Shekhar, Professor (Rtd), School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru.

Ms Shwetha Rasquinha hails from Vittal, D/o Vincent Rasquinha and Late Regina Rasquinha, and is the second person to complete doctoral studies from the Vittal Parish.

Her colleagues and well-wishers have congratulated her for her highest achievement in academics and successful completion of quality research.
