Udupi: Baavali Kudru residents demand bridge to the mainland

Udupi, Feb 16: As many as 30 Christian families, living in Baavali Kudru, an island, spread across 100 acres since six generations have demanded for a permanent bridge connecting the Kudru to the mainland Neelavar, near Brahmavar.

During rainy seasons River Sita inundates many parts of the island. In the year 1969 floods made the residents to shift from their houses, to the safer places. In the absence of a bridge, residents have resorted to small boats as a means of transport.

Many families of `Baavali Kudru' (Bats' Island) near Brahmavar in Udupi taluk have already abandoned the island and students from many other families have been staying in their relatives house outside the island, fearing to cross the river during rainy season. These families have been struggling since 30 years to get a bridge connecting the island sanctioned by the government.

Though the Zilla Panchayath has prepared an estimate of Rs 33 lakhs for constructing a bridge, the process has not taken the momentum, for the short of funds. Prashanth Neelavara, a resident of Baavali Kudru said that Rajyasabha member Oscar Fernandies has allotted Rs 15 lakhs from his MP's Local Area Development Fund and Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat has agreed to give Rs 5 lakhs from his MLA fund. Still they need another Rs 13 lakhs to start the work.

According to Silvia, "Now I have learnt pulling the boat. Can you imagine we peddling the boat during rainy season?''. She said that she had not admitted her six year old boy to the school, as he is scared of crossing the river in a boat.

Apolin, another resident of Baavali Kudru, recalls two of her sons luckily surviving a boat tragedy, while crossing the River Seeta. Apolin's son doing his diploma resides in his relatives house in Brahmavar, to avoid the hassles. According her newly married daughters in law hesitate to live in the Island and ultimately vacate the island to live in rented houses in the mainland.

One Joseph D'souza takes the residents from one riverbank to another. According to him many of the residents of the island take the boat themselves. Will their dream to have a bridge come true soon?

No question of imposing lockdown in Karnataka again, says minister

Bengaluru, Jun 14: Karnataka Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar on Sunday said there was no question of reimposition of the lockdown amid speculation that it would be done.

"The question of lockdown is not in front of us. There is such speculation as the Prime Minister is holding a video conference with all Chief Ministers on June 16 and 17.

On June 17 our state will be taking part in it at around 3 pm," Mr Sudhakar said in response to a question.

Speaking to reporters at Kalaburagi, he said the current situation would be discussed in that meeting. Mr Sudhakar said the Prime Minister has repeatedly been holding such video conferencing exercises to take stock of the situation and plan for the future.

"There will not be a lockdown anymore according to me," he added.

There has been speculation that there would be another shutdown from this month owing to a rapid rise in the number of cases.

Mr Sudhakar had on Friday said experts have indicated a surge in COVID-19 cases in the state in August and that the government was taking all precautionary measures in that direction.

As of June 13 evening, cumulatively 6,824 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 81 deaths and 3,648 discharges.

Karnataka BJP urges Modi govt to ban PFI, SDPI

Bengaluru, Jan 29: The Karnataka unit of BJP has urged the Centre and the State governments to ban the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), accusing them of harbouring terrorist tendencies.

Addressing a press meet, N Ravi Kumar, state general secretary of the party, alleged that there was a nexus between the Congress, the PFI and the SDPI.

“Recent reports have exposed the links between the PFI and the Congress,” he said, accusing Congress leader Kapil Sibal of receiving huge funds from PFI to defend their cases in the Supreme Court.

He also accused the organisations as the ones responsible for the death of 23 Hindu activists in Karnataka. Such incidents have proven that both SDPI and PFI are dubious organisations, he said.

Woman who came from Saudi Arabia hospitalized in Manipal over corona scare

Udupi, Mar 11: An elderly woman, who had recently visited Saudi Arabia has been admitted to an isolation ward at KMC in Manipal, here with symptoms of fever, cough and breathlessness.

The 68-year-old woman hails from Sagar taluk in Shivamogga district of Karnataka.

The patient had travelled to Saudi Arabia in the last week of February and was treated for fever cough and breathlessness there.

After recovery, she had travelled back to Bengaluru, where she was screened at the airport.

Later, she reached Shivamogga where she was treated at Nanjappa Hospital for symptoms of fever, cough.

As she has symptoms of coronavirus, she is quarantined and is under observation. The samples will have been sent to Bengaluru and the result is awaited.
