Udupi, February 17: Lokayukta Justice N Santhosh Hegde on Thursday called upon the students to excommunicate the corrupt in the society.

He was speaking after inaugurating M-Battled, the state level inter-collegiate Commerce, Management and Cultural Fest organized by the Department of Commerce, Milagres College, Kallianpur.

He advised the people to change their attitude towards the people who earn money illegitimately.

“Unfortunately persons who earned money through illegitimate means are being honoured in the public, for the pittance they give out as donation,” he added.

“If the cases of corruption were settled within six months 50 per cent of the corruption could be curbed,'' he opined.

People want to know the truth on the scams. They don't bother whether it is from the PAC or JPC, Hegde said. He said that politicians or elected representatives think that they were the masters of the people. But in democracy people are the bosses and elected representatives are servants of the people.

Replying to questions from the students Hegde said that percentage of Lokayuktha's success in nabbing the corrupt was less that five per cent. But they had been successful in creating awareness against bribe. By that many people who were sitting on a border, whether to take bribe or not to take, have chosen a non-corrupt path. With the increase in the number of raids by the Lokayuktha many of the officials had been scared of being trapped, he added.

Rev Dr Baptist Menezes presided over the programme.

Principal of Milagres Rev Fr Fred Mascarenhas, Principal of the Milagres PU College Rev Fr Vijay Lobo, Convener of the College Marvin D'Souza, HOD of Department of Commerce Peter D'Souza, student Co-ordinators Chester D'Souza and Lavith Denette were present on the dais.

Bengaluru, Jun 24: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah criticised the current state government rates for COVID-19 treatment in private hospitals and said that the patients must be treated free of charge in all hospitals.

"The state government has fixed rates for treating COVID-19. The current rates are shocking to the people," Siddaramaiah said.
Questioning the state government, he said, "Where can people pay these rates fixed by the government per day? Looking at these rates can be heartbreaking for the people. This raises the question of whether the government is sensitive to people's issues."

"The government must promptly announce free treatment and set up a standard treatment protocol. The government should appoint a panel of experts to continuously monitor whether treatment is being properly administered and create an environment where the public is free from anxiety," Siddaramaiah added.

Karnataka on Tuesday reported 322 fresh COVID-19 positive cases and eight deaths.
According to the state health department, the total number of positive cases has mounted to 9,721 and 150 deaths. So far, 6,004 people have been discharged.

Bengaluru, Jan 10: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday launched 'Sapthapadi', a mass marriage program in Bengaluru.

The state authorities will provide a mangalsutra worth Rs 40,000 and Rs 5,000 to the groom. They will also give Rs 10,000 to the bride after marriage.

The state government has also informed that the department has shortlisted some temples where the mass marriages will be held.

Yediyurappa also confirmed that the government will help communities like Muslim and Christians also to organise mass marriage as per their respective rituals.

According to the state government guidelines, issued last year in November, both parents of the couple should attend the ceremony if the duo wants to avail benefits of this offer but those who want to marry without their parent's permission do not stand a chance here.

Also, those wanting a love marriage will not be able to reap the benefits of the scheme. The plan is to conduct about 1,000 marriages in 90-100 temples.

The couples wanting to tie the knot are expected to register themselves 30 days before the scheduled date in the temple. Following which a list will be prepared.
