Mangalore City Corporation Mayoral contest heats up

Mangalore, February 20: Cousins and first time corporators will vie for the post of mayor when elections to the same will be held on February 28. With the state government on Thursday finally announcing the roster of reservations to the post of mayor and deputy mayors of all city corporations in the state, political activity among the ruling BJP in Mangalore City Corporation has gone up a notch with the two aspirants pressing for their case.

The post of mayor has been reserved for SC candidate, and that of deputy mayor for woman (general) candidate. The two SC candidates in the ruling saffron camp are Praveen representing 24-Derebail (south ward) and his cousin Amitha Kala representing the adjacent 25-Derebail (west ward). While Praveen is upbeat about his prospects of succeeding Rajani Dugganna as the mayor, Amitha says she has left the choice to the party seniors.

For Amitha, the very move by the state government to reserve the post for a SC candidate is a victory of sorts. Asserting that she is not lobbying for the post, Amitha, an arts graduate from University College said she would be happy either way. "I will go with whatever the party leadership decides," she told STOI, adding what is more important is for the next mayor to focus on issues pertaining to people, especially people from SC/ST communities.

Praveen, a little more brash admitted that he has been pressing for his case with the party leadership. "I stand a very good chance of making it to the top post," he said, adding that the party corporators seemed inclined in his favour. However, a senior BJP corporator said no final decision has yet been taken on the possible candidate and the party leadership would meet closer to the date of the elections and finalise the names of candidates for the two posts.

Bengaluru, Aug 4 : Without mentioning any party leader's name, Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar on Monday appealed to Congress workers not to make any "defamatory statement" against any political leader on social media platforms.

Taking to Twitter, Shivakumar wrote, "I appeal to Congress workers not to make defamatory statements against any political leader, on matters of health and other issues on social media platforms. It is not in our culture to wish bad for others. Congress is a party that exemplifies brotherhood and humanity."

His statement comes days after Rajya Sabha MP and AICC in-charge for Gujarat, Rajiv Satav comment where he suggested that introspection in the party should begin from the time of the United Progressive Alliance -II government.

Later, Satav took to Twitter to clarify his remarks at Thursday's meeting of the party's Upper House MPs. Satav, through a series of tweets on Saturday, said he was not comfortable discussing what goes on inside party meetings in forums outside.

Manjeshwar, Jul 8: Manjeshwar police arrested a man with 10 Kg of Ganja while fleeing away from a checkpoint at Battippadavu last night.

The police said on Wednesday that since the vehicle did not stop they had to chase it and after going some distance the driver lost control over the steering and it met with an accident.

The police immediately arrested the accused and the ganja was found concealed in a gunny bag.

Bengaluru, May 29: A cost-effective state of the art glove box testing booth for swab collection was inaugurated by Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar at Victoria hospital.

Inaugurating the specially designed booth for safer, easier and quicker testing, Medical Education Minister Dr Sudhakar said that the portable booths can be used at border check posts and hot spots.

"The testing method involves the collection of samples from inside a box of aluminium and glass. The suspected corona virus-infected individual, whose samples are being taken, has to walk up to the booth and stand in front of the glass exterior. The healthcare worker inside the kiosk collects the sample and then, follows the sanitisation process before proceeding to take the next sample. The collection process, fully contactless, gets over in five minutes," the Minister said.

Dr Sudhakar also said: "This booth significantly reduces manpower requirement and the need for PPE kits. The main advantages of this procedure are that it needs fewer healthcare workers and strictly adheres to the norms of social distancing. 

The booth is low-cost. Each model costs about Rs 15,000-20,000."
It is also portable and can be mounted on a vehicle and transported to any location.

It can be particularly useful for collecting samples in hot spots and border checkpoints, he added.
