Devotees gift 4 kg gold pinnacle to deity of Sri Mariamma Temple

Mangalore, February 20: Devotees of Sri Mariamma temple have dedicated a golden offering to the presiding deity at the annual Jatra Mahotsava on Sunday at Urwastore here.

The offering is in the form of a gold pinnacle atop the sanctum sanctorum weighing nearly 4 kg and costing nearly Rs 88 lakh. The current pinnacle atop the sanctum sanctorum is made out of copper.


The annual jatra mahotsava has commenced on February 11. The chandika yaga and community mass feeding programme held in association with Mangalore Karnataka Purseine Fishermen's Association.


The golden pinnacle has brought in a procession to the temple on February 15.


The annual mahapooja and pratishtavardanthi will be held on February 21 and 22 respectively.


The nemotsava of Malaraya, Doomavathi daivas of the temple will be held on February 26. The 48-day long 'Sandhya Bhajan' held in the run up to the annual festival has already commenced.


On the security aspect of the temple, the temple management committee has already installed a siren and have drawn up plans to install closed-circuit television cameras shortly. These steps have been taken in view of the huge quantity of gold jewellery and other valuables located on the temple premises.


The temple also has its set of security guards to ensure that there is watch on the temple round the clock.

Udupi, Jul 26: Two persons including a lady doctor have been arrested by the Kaup police in Udupi district for trying to use fake salary documents to avail loan from a bank to buy a car. 

According to police, on July 24, the doctor had visited Bank of Baroda's branch office at Kaup Moodabettu. She had approached the branch manager for a car loan for herself and her brother. She claimed that her monthly salary is Rs 2.66 lakh.

The bank verified the details furnished along with the loan application. The bank found that even though the doctor had furnished salary slips of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, she was presently not employed there.

The bank manager has filed a complaint at Kaup police station, accusing the doctor of trying to cheat the bank by availing loan on the basis of fake documents.

The police registered a case and nabbed her when she visited the Katapady branch of the same bank today. The police also arrested a man, who according to the doctor, created fake documents for her.

Karwar, Aug 6: In a shocking incident, a 40-day-old girl child was murdered by her own parents in Sirsi town in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district.

The accused are Priyanka (21) and her husband Chandrashekhar Bhat (42), residents of Ramanakoppa in Sahasrahalli in Yellapur.

According to police, the couple did not want a girl child and hence threw it into a well. The couple was arrested by the police the very next day.

The incident came to light after the child’s maternal uncle, Abhishek Jagadeesh Singh Choudhari, a resident of Rajeev Nagar in Sirsi, lodge a complaint with Yellapur police station. 

He had claimed that his sister Priyanka’s baby had been kidnapped and subsequently killed. 

Priyanka had claimed that she woke up around 2.30am on August 2 to find that her baby, Tanushri, was not in her cradle. Her husband’s family subsequently started searching for the baby, which they found dead inside a well. 

Choudhari suspected that Tanushri had been kidnapped, and had been killed by her abductors to erase any evidence of their crime.

Uttara Kannada superintendent of police Shivaprakash Devaraju constituted a team to crack the crime, and the cops, who subjected the parents to an interrogation, found that they were the culprits.

Mangaluru, Apr 18: Three people, including a woman, who were being treated at the city's Wenlock Hospital have been discharged after they recovered from Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

With this, a total of 12 people who had tested positive for the virus until Thursday have been discharged from various hospitals in Dakshina Kannada.

A 39-year-old advocate from Uppinangady tested positive for Covid -19 on Friday, he has been admitted to the Wenlock Hospital and is being treated. With this, only one COVID-19 positive patient is being treated at Wenlock Hospital till Friday evening.
