Lorry overturns: One dead, 18 injured

Mangalore, February 23: A tipper lorry transporting labourers to a road contract work site overturned after it hit an auto rickshaw in the process of overtaking it at Puthigepadavu under Moodbidri police station limits on Tuesday leading to the death of a woman and causing injuries to 18 others.

Five of the grievously injured have been admitted to a private hospital in the city, while the rest are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Moodbidri, police stated.

The deceased has been identified as Renuka (35). Sutharo, Mohammed Akther, Saroja, Lakshmi, Vikas, Rajesh, Susheelavva, Raju, Mohammed Ajeem, Sandeep, Jihavul Rehman, Jenjin and Pramod Kumar are among the injured.

The tipper, which was carrying 17 labourers from Kinnigoli to work on road asphalting at Moodbidri, belonged to one Santhosh Shetty of Kinnigoli, a PWD contractor.

Mangaluru, Apr 26: After directions from Karnataka government, migrant labourers are being sent to their native villages in batches by hiring as many as 60 buses.

Divisional Controller of Mangaluru KSRTC Division S N Arun said on Sunday that 100 buses from Mangaluru and Puttur ferried stranded labourers on Saturday. Buses were disinfected before the journey.

Buses also left from Dharmasthala, Bantwal, Puttur and Sullia to different destinations. In adherence to social distancing rules, each bus left with 20 to 22 labourers.

Bengaluru, Jun 26: A 60-year-old woman, who tested positive for COVID-19 positive and was undergoing treatment, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in the restroom of KC General hospital last night.

According to the police, the 60-year-old female COVID-19 patient hung herself in the restroom of KC general hospital in Bengaluru. She was admitted to the hospital on June 18 along with her daughter-in-law and grandson.

"Around 2 am, she went to the washroom. When she did not return back, her daughter-in-law went to check where she found her hanging dead," confirmed Bengaluru police.

An investigation into the matter is underway, police said.

Bengaluru, Jul 29: State officials will conduct Common Entrance Test (CET) exam as per the instructions given by the state high court, said Karnataka deputy chief minister CN Ashwathnarayan on Tuesday.

"Officials have informed that they are all set to conduct exams on July 30 and 31. We will put this matter in front of the high court. As per the instructions of the high court, we will move forward," said Ashwathnarayan.

This comes after Karnataka High court asked the state government to reconsider the decision of conducting the CET exam.

"...I had called an emergency meeting with district collectors, officials of education, transport, health, police department. And, I took information about the preparedness for conducting the CET exam," he added.

Karnataka CET Exam is a state-level entrance exam organised for providing admissions in Engineering, Pharmacy, B Pharma and other courses offered by colleges and institutions located in the state.
