Mangalore, February 24: As the demands of members of the Project Displaced Families of MSEZ have not been met by the authorities, they have decided to take out an indefinite hunger strike and Sathyagraha from March 1 in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here.

Addressing media persons at Press Club here on Thursday, Deepak Permude, Member of Kalavaru Gram Panchayat said that the solution to the issue of employment by MSEZ for the educated youth from the displaced families remained vague.

He said that they had rejected the proposal mooted by the heads of MSEZ on January 29 in Bangalore.

Among other things, the proposal assures them of sustainable allowance on the lines of unemployment allowance till jobs are provided, formation of a trust governed by PDF members and MSEZ officials to oversee benefits, ex-gratia payment to PDFs apart from what was already agreed upon to be paid, providing employment in other units and the salary drawn at the units to be partly or wholly matched by SEZ, educational allowance to members of displaced families, among others.

Deepak said none of these proposals were agreeable to the youth or the members.

He said they would meet district in-charge minister Krishna Palemar, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and MLAs from the region, and discuss the issue.

It may be recalled that a month ago, an agitation took a dramatic turn when two youth, Kumar and Lokesh, attempted self-immolation by dousing themselves with kerosene, frustrated with the long delay in MSEZ providing them employment.

Bengaluru, Jan 16: Members and activists of social organisation Rakshana Vedike on Thursday staged a protest and demanded the arrest of BJP MLA Somashekhara Reddy, for his 'provocative' remarks and statements.

The protesters gathered near Gandhi’s statue near Maurya circle in the city and demanded that the BJP MLA should be arrested immediately.

The protesters alleged that Reddy’s remark were aimed at inciting communal hatred and that his remarks do not do justice to his being an elected representative of the people in the state assembly.
