Police arrest members of inter-state thief gang

Mangalore, February 25: The Dakshina Kannada rural police have busted an inter-state gang of vehicle thieves with the arrest of its five key members.

The arrested are Moidin alias Unhi (37), son of Ummar and resident of Varkady village in Kasargod, Sayyed Nihal alias Sayyed Irfan Nihal (40), son of Rashid Saab and resident of Bangalore, Hanif alias Eli Hanif (37), son of Badavakunhi, resident of Thokoor near Jokatte and S Ashraf (28), son of Ramla and resident of Shanthinagar in Vitlapadnur.

Disclosing this to media persons on Friday, A Subrahmanyeshwara Rao, DK Superintendent of Police, said that the recovery process of these stolen vehicles began following a tip-off received by the police from Moidin and Hanif who were arrested by the Bantwal police under the guidance of Circle Inspector K Nanjunde Gowda on February 18.

So far police had recovered 22 two-wheelers and 14 four-wheelers including two tippers, two lorries, two Scorpio cars, two Omni vans, an Innova, Swift, Santro, Qualis, Maruthi 800, Indica each valued at nearly Rs 1 crore from their possession. Five vehicles including Tavera, Maruthi Omni, Scorpio and two lorries are yet to be recovered, he said.

The vehicles have been recovered from various parts of the state such as Bangalore, Hubli, Mangalore, Mandya, Davanagere, Kerala, Arasikere, Majeshwara, Mysore, Bantwal and other places.

The gang which was active since two years, used to steal vehicles, mainly using duplicate keys or altering gear indicator, throughout the state and sell them to people by making fake RC and other documents, he added. “Since most of vehicles have been registered under Dharawad RTO i.e., KA 25, we will also investigate the role of officers in this connection,” he said.

In various parts of the states, 24 cases have been registered against Nihal who is the prime accused, while S Ashraf who was in judicial custody has been released on body warrant.

Police personnel Vivekananda, MRM Thahasildar, Rakshith Kumar, ASI Kepu Gowda, Head constables Sanjeeva Purusha, Jnanashekhara, Kaleimar and others participated in the operation.

The SP declared a reward of Rs 10,000 for the police team. Rohini Katoch, Puttur ASP was present.

Bellary,  Jul 26: A 100-year-old woman resident of Huvina Hadagali town in Bellary district, Karnataka, recovered from COVID-19 after testing positive for the virus earlier this month.

"Doctors treated me well. Along with regular food, I was eating an apple a day. The doctors are giving me tablets and injection, and I am healthy now. COVID-19 is like a common cold," said Hallamma while speaking to news agency.

The woman's son, daughter-in-law, and grandson had also tested positive for the virus, and the family was treated at their home.

According to health department officials, her son works at a bank and had tested positive on July 3, after which Hallamma tested positive on July 16; the 100-year-old reported negative for the virus on July 22.

Meanwhile, the covid-19 death toll in the country rose to 32,063 with 705 fatalities being recorded in a day on Sunday. The number of tests for detection of covid-19 has crossed the 16-million mark in the country.

Shivamogga, Mar 8: In a tragic incident, three people died on the spot and one person severely injured after a car, in which they were travelling dashed against a wayside tree in Kaspadi village in Sagar Taluk on Sunday.

Police said that the deceased have been identified as Siddappa (40), Venkatesha (50), G Tippanna (60), while injured Nagaraj, was admitted to Hospital at Sagar.

The mishap took place when the victims were their way to visit Kargal Village from Raichur.

Udupi, Jul 27: Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa has appointed BJP leader Lalaji R Mendon as the new chairman of the State Backward Classes Commission.

Mendon is a three-time MLA from the Kapu Assembly constituency. During his second term as MLA, he was the Director in Konkan Railway’s Board.

Mr Yediyurappa has appointed 24 MLAs to different corporations in the state. Mendon is only one from coastal Karnataka.

Mendon is the only MLA representing BJP from fishermen's community. He was the president of Kaup unit of BJP Yuvamorcha. He also served as the state BJP secretary.
