Mangalore, February, 25: Mangalore City Corporation Mayor Rajani Dugganna on Friday said that the civic body is planning to have a Special Police Force to regulate the water bills and dues.

Dugganna, who is expected to vacate the office within a few days, addressing a press meet at the MCC said that this step is very necessary as the water bill arrears of MCC since 2003-04 have already reached Rs 9.77 crore.

She said that the police team will be consisting of one Sub Inspector, one Assistant Sub Inspector, four Police Constables and two Head Constables.

The state cabinet has recently passed orders for mass disconnection drive to recover water bill arrears in Mangalore, Mysore and Hubli-Dharwad City Corporations amounting to Rs 132 crore, including principal amount and penal interest.

However Dugganna said that disconnection drive in Mangalore is still a distant dream as the civic body does not have the wherewithal to launch such a massive exercise.

She said that a total of Rs 50.54 crore out of the SFC grant of Rs 100 crore, has already been spent for the concretization of 16 roads of which 13 roads have already been completed and 3 are under progress.

Duganna said Rs 8.23 crore has been spent in the process of acquiring land for the construction of a new bus stand in Pumpwell.

She said that Rs. 3.92 crore has been reserved for the development of parks, bus stands, and asphalting roads leading to them. Twenty-three such projects have been completed and four more are still in progress, she said.

As part of energy saving drive, the MCC has planned to use CFLC as a substitute for sodium street lights henceforth, she said.

She also presented a list of developments that had taken place in the form of bio-gas plants, property tax, cleanliness drives, and others.

Standing committee chairpersons Roopa D. Bangera, Shantha R., Sudhir Shetty, and Corporator Ashwini were present.

Hassan, Feb 2: Former prime minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda has said that the controversy over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act should be resolved peacefully through discussion.

Speaking to reporters in Halebeed on Saturday, Gowda said that the Act affects only Muslims but would also prove troublesome for the Hindus. “Opening fire on anti-CAA protesters is the not solution to the issue,” he said.

Deve Gowda said that during his tenure as prime minister a number of problems concerning Muslims were addressed. “But, in the run up to election, Rahul Gandhi described us ‘B’ team of BJP. This led to vote swing,” he added. When his comment was sought on the budget, the former prime minister said that he had not yet read the budget document.
