Udup, February 26: Railway budget has evoked mixed reaction here. President of the Udupi Railway Yatri Sangha R.L. Dias said: “We are happy that the Ministry has extended the Yashwanthpur-Mangalore day train (16515) to Karwar. This train runs thrice a week. We have been fighting for the extension of this train to Karwar for the past two years.”

Mr. Dias said that owing to the extension of the train to Karwar, people from Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts would be connected to Bangalore. This would help those visiting Bangalore for government, educational and private work. He said the other demand for stoppage of three trains which passed through Udupi had not been fulfilled. These three trains are Kochuveli – Dehra Dun Express (weekly), Kochuveli – Amritsar Express (weekly) and Pune – Ernakulum Express.

The sangha had sought increasing the number of coaches on Mangalore-Kurla Matsyagandha Express from 21 to 24. But no action had been taken. It had demanded that the number of coaches on Mangalore-Madgaon train be increased from 11 to 14 as it passed through temple towns of Udupi, Gokarn and Murudeshwar. But this too had not been met, Mr. Dias said.

President of the Udupi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Prasadraj Kanchan said that the chamber was delighted that the Yashwanthpur-Mangalore train had been extended to Karwar. The chamber had submitted a memorandum to the Railway Ministry on this issue.

In a press release, D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP, said that the budget had not given adequate importance to Karnataka. The Yashwanthpur -Mangalore tri-weekly day train had been extended to Karwar. He would strive to see that this train became a daily.

The demands for a separate railway division in Mangalore and modernisation of Udupi and Mangalore railway stations had not been fulfilled. Only Rs. 10 crore had been earmarked for laying track on the Kadur-Chikmagalur section. This was an ordinary budget, he added.

Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh), May 19: Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband has issued a fatwa asking Muslims to offer their Eid prayers this time at home, instead of congregating at mosques.

The directive comes amid a nationwide lockdown to slow down the spread of coronavirus.

Despite the relaxations announced in the lockdown, religious and other large gatherings are still banned.

The fatwa was issued in response to a query put to the seminary, its spokesman Ashraf Usmani said.

The fatwa said the Eid namaz can be offered in the same manner that the Friday prayers are now being read at home.

It said not holding the namaz in the usual manner is pardonable in circumstances such as these.

Bidar, Feb 15: Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah on Friday demanded the State government to withdraw the sedition case against a mother and a teacher of Shaheen school immediately.

“The police can’t execute anything without the government’s permission. The sedition case against two women should be withdrawn immediately. I will raise the matter in the Assembly to draw the government’s attention,” Siddaramaiah told reporters after meeting the woman at the prison here.

He clarified that he visited the woman not to support the school, but to extend moral support to her.

“I am an advocate and I can clearly establish based on my experience that staging a satirical play doesn’t amount for sedition. It doesn’t even defame anybody. Three cases of sedition have been registered across the state,” he charged.

He alleged that the government was following dual policy. Though the Supreme Court had concluded that the demolition of Babri Masjid was illegal, a play dealing with the demolition was staged at Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat’s school.
The sedition case had not been registered for staging the play.

He charged that there was an undeclared emergency in the country as the freedom of expression was being suppressed.

Mangaluru, May 31: Karnataka BJP president MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has claimed that there has been no differences of opinion within the state BJP.

"The BJP-led government will complete its term under the leadership of B S Yediyurappa," Kateel told media persons in the city on Saturday.

“A few MLAs had met and discussed the developments in North Karnataka. There is nothing wrong in discussing development keeping in mind the party's interests.”

Indiscipline within the party will not be tolerated. Strict action will be initiated against those who indulge in such activities by the party High Command, he warned.

The government, led by Yediyurappa, has carried out good works in the state. All the MLAs are supporting the chief minister. All the MLAs are in contact with me, claimed Kateel.
