MCC daily wage workers stage 'begging' protest

Mangalore, February 26: The daily wage earners working for Mangalore City Corporation on Saturday staged a novel protest by resorting to begging in front of the MCC building here seeking fulfilment of their various demands including the regularisation of their services.


Around hundred paurakarmikas, both men and women, sat in front of the main entrance of the building holding empty plates between 12:30pm and 2:00pm.

The protesters were led by Dakshina Kannada District Paurakarmikas and Fourth Grade Employees' Association.

Earlier, speaking to media persons, Association President Gangadhar said that the daily wage workers, who have been waiting for the regularisation of their service for the last couple of decades, have reached a pitiable condition and their pleas have been completely neglected by the government and MCC.

He said that successive governments have failed to solve the decade-old problem of daily wage workers, who have been deprived of their basic human rights.

Currently there are 225 regularised paurakarmikas working under MCC excluding 64 members whose regularisation proposal was not approved by the state government.

Apart from them there were 139 daily wage workers who had served for around 15 years with a desire to be regularised but in vain. 15 among them have already died during the course of their service.

The daily wage workers are spending their life for cleaning the city without any protective gear, hand glows and shoes, Gangadhar said.

“The government stopped providing hand glows and protective shoes to them over five years ago. Now they are working bare-handed” he said.

The protesters later submitted a memorandum to MCC Commissioner KN Vijayaprakash.

Bengaluru, May 2: The Centre’s classification of districts created confusion in Karnataka as the state’s own categorisation deviates significantly from the health ministry’s list.

For instance, the Centre put the number of districts in the red zone in state at three, while the state Covid-19 war room puts it at 14. Bengaluru Urban and Mysuru figure in the red zone in both lists. While Bengaluru Rural with zero active cases on May 1makes it to the Centre’s red-zone list, it is in the orange zone according to the state.

In addition to these two, the state classifies Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Mandya, Bidar, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkaballapura, Dharwad, Gadag, Tumakuru and Davanagere as red-zone districts.

State Covid war-room authorities said they would take a look at the Centre’s criteria for classification and take a call. Besides, incharge Munish Mudgil pointed out that states are allowed to make additions to the red and orange zones. According to the Centre’s list, Karnataka has 13 districts in the orange zone and 14 in the green zone.

Sudan said, “the districts were earlier designated as hotspots or red zones, orange zones and green zones primarily based on the cumulative cases reported and the doubling rate. Since recovery rates have gone up, the districts are now being designated across various zones duly broad-basing the criteria.

This classification takes into consideration incidence of cases, doubling rate, extent of testing and surveillance feedback. A district will be considered under the green zone if there are no confirmed cases so far or if there is no reported case in the past 21 days.”

Bengaluru, Apr 2: About 1,500 people from Karnataka might have attended the Tablighi Jamaat event in Nizamuddin in the national capital between March 8 to 20. Of these, the State has been able to trace 800 people.
 
Of the 800 persons, 143 people have been found to be symptomatic.
 
Mr Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary (Health and Family Welfare), in a statement here on Thursday said that the Centre had sent the list of 1,500 people to the State.
 
“We cannot say if all these have attended the congregation. Some of them may have attended and some may be the contacts of those who have attended. We have been able to trace 800 from the list and samples of 143 symptomatic persons have been sent for tests."

Bengaluru, Jun 28: Karnataka Minister for Medical Education Dr K Sudhakar faced criticism by netizens after he shared a TikTok video sent by his daughter and wife, who are currently undergoing treatment in a COVID-19 facility.

TikTok is a Chinese video-sharing social networking service owned by ByteDance, a Beijing-based internet technology company founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming.

Dr Sudhakar’s father, his wife and daughter who tested positive for Covid-19 has been admitted to a designated facility and in order to make his birthday memorable, his daughter sent him greetings through TikTok video.

When the minister shared the TikTok video, people pointed out that the minister should know better and that he should urge his family to boycott the Chinese video-sharing platform and lead by example.

Many were miffed that a BJP leader put up a TikTok video at a time when tensions are running high between India and China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.
