Mangalore, November 29: Poor residents of Thannirbavi staged a protest demonstration under the banner of Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner here to exert pressure on the district administration and state government to fulfil their demand of providing door numbers and site title deeds.

The protest coincided with the election of the new Mayor at Mangalore City Corporation, of which Thannirbavi is a part. There are around 300 families residing at Thannirbavi and 98 percent of them are Dalits and are from BPL families.

The protesters expressed their fury over the government, which according to them bought their ancestral lands citing industrial development but handed them over to private industrialists.

Speaking on the occasion Sunil Kumar Bajal, Secretary, CPI (M), Mangalore City Committee, accused the government of planning to evacuate the poor residents of Thannirbavi, a tourist landscape, which is being converted into an industrial hub.

He said due to the lack of door numbers the poor families residing in Thannirbhavi are deprived off all the basic facilities, and development schemes.

“Their lives have turned into hell, without ration card, electricity and water supply. They cannot even take benefit from any government loan, widow pension, and monthly allowance for handicapped or monthly allowance for old citizes etc,” he said adding that the only reason for this is that they do not posses a door number.

He said that his party has decided to intensify the protest for the cause as the previous protests were neglected by the MCC and district administration.

Lingappa Nanthur, Secretary, Struggle Committee for Dalits rights, and Thannirbavi Struggle Committee leaders Bebi Madhava, Jayashree and Shameema Banu were among the protesters.

Later, they handed over a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav.
