Women vow to make their village plastic free

March 1, 2011

Mangalore, February 28: Spnadana Trust, a social welfare NGO, organised a Waste Management Workshop on Sunday.

The workshop was held at the community hall in the small village in the out skirts of Mangalore called Preeti Nagar. About 65 women of the community, basically the members of self-help groups participated in the workshop.

The objective of the workshop was to make women sensitive towards the environment. Arif Padubbidri, senior reporter of Vijaya Karnataka daily, inaugurated the workshop.

In his inaugural address Arif emphasised that women can play a pivotal role in bringing about a change in the society. From Central Government to local bodies, everyone brings in new laws and rules to ban plastics. But they fail in executing these laws. Such ban appears only in the newspapers while the use of plastics continues. The real ban on plastics is possible only if every woman decides to discontinue the use of plastic.

He told the women that plastics are made of harmful chemicals such as vinyl and benzene which develop cancer. Even the workers in the plastic factory are badly affected. From the production stage to the utility stage and even when the plastics are burnt they constantly release poisonous chemicals into our food, or into the water bodies or in the air. Plastic is not only harmful to man but also to environment, soil, plants and animals, he said.

He explained how women could write a letter to the MCC to construct a recycling bin in the community were the people could dispose the plastic packets which would otherwise be littered on the sides of the road. This accumulated plastic can be then recycled rather than burning them and causing air pollution. By the end of his talk the women took up a resolution to make Preeti Nagar a plastic free community. They also decided to write a letter to the Mangalore City Corporation to construct such bins. The women also promised to reduce the use of plastics and to go for other alternatives.

The second session was conducted by Dr Hareesh Joshy of Department of Zoology, St Aloysius College. Dr Joshy is a rigorous campaigner of environmentalism.

His session was on vermi-compost. In the two hour session, Dr Joshy told the women how harmful chemicals are used as fertilizers and pesticides in growing crops. These chemicals enter our food chain and cause cancer in man.

Vermi-compost is a kind of manure that is prepared out of the household watse. The vermi-compost can be made at home and is more effective than the chemical fertilizers in the market, he said.

Dr Joshy demonstrated how the compost can be made at home in the flower pots. Since there is a huge demand for the vermi-compost in the market, he encouraged the women to make the compost in large quantity for commercial purpose.

The process of making the compost does not require scientific apparatus but a pot, little bit of water, coconut shells, house hold watses and cow dung. The compost requires 1 month and 21 days in all to be ready. The earthworm is added to the mixture only after the first 21 days. Since the earthworm multiply in number during the process, he said that they could make money by selling these worms as well, while informing that there is a huge demand for earthworms. At the end of the session, Dr Joshy asked the women to show a mock display of the process of vermi-compost preparation.

He also gave them further tips on using the compost, and other information.

Both the sessions were informative. Dr Joshy distributed a sample of vermi-compost to the women to apply it on thier plants to see the results. The programme was successful in meeting its objectives as the women were motivated into action towards projecting environment through waste management.

New Delhi, Feb 17: The Congress high command is likely to announce the party’s key troubleshooter in Karnataka, DK Shivakumar as the next state unit president with MB Patil as the working president, according to party leaders who spoke on condition of anonymity, in what could be a delicate balancing act between competing caste claims in the state..

Former CM S Siddaramaiah is likely to continue as the Congress Legislature Party leader, the leaders added.

The KPCC presidentship has been vacant ever since the incumbent Dinesh Gundu Rao resigned following the defeat in the bypolls, in which the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) won 12 of the 15 seats, ensuring a majority for itself in the state assembly.

The state leadership issue became contentious following that, with Shivakumar, a Vokkaliga, lobbying to ensure that his role as party’s main go-to man during difficult times be rewarded, the leaders cited above said. Patil, a former home minister and a Lingayat leader, was the favoured choice of Siddaramaiah, they added.

A former minister in the Siddaramiah cabinet told HT on condition of anonymity the appointment was now “just a formality”.

“How long could the current uncertainty continue? Shivakumar is a go-getter who can also help generate funds for the party. For instance, on the Bidar school sedition issue, we were late and started an agitation only after the accused got bail. With Shivakumar at the helm, we will be more aggressive and able to put the BJP government on a mat by highlighting all their omissions and commissions,” the former minister added.

The decision to appoint Shivakumar -- a seven-term MLA who served in the cabinets of former CMs S Bangarappa, SM Krishna, Siddaramiah and HD Kumaraswamy -- is likely to be a controversial one. He faces ongoing income tax and Enforcement Directorate (ED) probes, is currently on bail after being jailed by the ED in a money laundering case. He

In his 2018 poll affidavit, Shivakumar declared assets worth Rs 840 crore, making him one of the richest politicians in the state. His brother DK Suresh is a two term parliamentarian and is the sitting MP from the Bangalore Rural constituency.

Shivakumar’s latest move to build the world’s largest Christ statue in his constituency in Kanakapura has also come in for severe attack from Sangh Parivar outfits, who claim the land he donated was government-owned and illegally usurped by him.

Political analyst Manjunath said that Shivakumar, if appointed, is likely to inject a great degree of dynamism into the functioning of the party.

“He sees himself as a future Chief Minister and is very ambitious. If the appointments are confirmed, it will only vindicate the fact that the party high command has tried to balance caste interests by having a Vokkilga, a Lingayat and a Kuruba – the three leading castes in the state - heading different parts of the party. Also since the BJP is making a concerted effort to break into the Vokkaliga votebank, nominating Shivakumar would be a smart move to consolidate the community behind the party,” he said.

Ahmedabad/New Delhi, Jan 22: Interpol has issued a Blue Corner Notice seeking information about controversial self-styled godman Nithyananda, who fled the country amid allegations of wrongful confinement of children, officials said on Wednesday.

A Blue Corner Notice is issued by the international police cooperation body to collect additional information from its member countries about a person's identity, location or activities in relation to a crime.

The Gujarat Police had sent a request to the CBI, the nodal body for Interpol matters in India, seeking a Blue Corner Notice against Nithyananda, the officials said.

"Interpol issued the Blue Corner Notice against the controversial godman this month," Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad (rural), K T Kamariya, told PTI.

The police said they are now working to get Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice, a global arrest warrant, against Nithyananda.

The Gujarat Police had registered an FIR against Nithyananda after two girls went missing from his ashram in Ahmedabad.

He was charged with kidnapping and wrongful confinement of children to make them collect donations from followers to run his ashram.

Nithyananda was earlier declared wanted by the Gujarat Police.

While police continue to look for him, reports emerged in December last year that he has created a Hindu nation, Kailaasa, with its own flag and political setup, on an island near Ecuador.
