Don't use, manufacture recycled plastic: MCC Commissioner

Mangalore, March 4: Dr KN Vijaya Prakash, Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation has warned the citizens against the use and manufacture of banned plastic.

In a press release, he said that it is disheartening that despite the raids conducted by MCC on January 19, 2011 the use and manufacture of plastic continues to be rampant in the city.

He informed that due to the usage of recycled plastic there will be several problems such as harm to environment, blocking the flow of water in drainage, loss of soil fertility, toxic food items and so on.

He reminded that the Supreme Court has ordered a ban on the sale of tobacco products like gutkha and pan masala in plastic pouches from March 1.

According to Recycled Plastics Manufacture and Usage Rules, 1999, by Ministry of Environment and Forests, the banned plastics should not be used in the city limits.

No vendor shall use carry bags or containers made of recycled plastics for storing, carrying, dispensing, or packaging of foodstuffs. The thickness of plastics should not be less than 40 microns, he informed.

He also informed violators of the rules will face hefty penalty and other disciplinary actions.

New Delhi, Mar 19: The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the validity of Karnataka's 2018 reservation law, which granted reservation in promotion to employees belonging to SC and ST categories.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud holds that applications filed by a group of general category employees for applying 'post-based quota' and the principle of the creamy layer at entry-level in public employment are not maintainable.

The apex court had, in November last year, reserved its order on the applications filed by general category candidates in the matter.

In May last year, the top court had upheld the law allowing reservations in promotions for SC and ST candidates with consequential seniority.

Mangaluru, Mar 1: A youth lost his life in a lift crash at a wedding hall at Kallapu near Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city today. 

The deceased has been identified as Hamzah (30), a resident near Thumbay, who was part of the catering team hired for the marriage ceremony. 

The tragedy occurred at around 2 p.m. when Hamzah was getting ready to bring utensils and other things by lift from the third floor of the hall. All of a sudden, the lift’s ropes came loose and Hamzah lost his balance and got trapped inside.

He was pulled out and rushed to a hospital in Deralakatte, but he breathed his last on the way. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Bengaluru, Feb 20: German software group SAP said on Thursday that it had temporarily shut down its offices across India for sanitisation after two employees in its Bengaluru Ecoworld office tested positive for H1N1 virus.

"Two SAP India employees based in Bangalore (RMZ Ecoworld office) have tested positive for the H1N1 virus. Detailed contact tracing that the infected colleagues may have come into contact with is underway," SAP India said in an emailed statement.

The company said its offices across Bengaluru, Gurugram and Mumbai have been closed for extensive sanitisation. All employees based in these locations have been asked to work from home till further notice

SAP India also advised its employees to seek medical advice if they or their family members have any symptoms of cold, cough with fever.

H1N1 or swine flu can spread through air. Its symptoms are cough, fever, sore throat, running nose, body ache, headache, chills and fatigue.
