Protest against Official's statement on UPCL

Udupi, March 5: Hundreds of Raitha Sangha activists, on Friday gheraoed Taluk Office, Udupi, protesting against Udupi Tahasildar Prasanna's statement supporting Nagarjuna.

It is to be noted here that in a section of Kannada dailies, a statement convincing the people that Nagarjuna power plant will not have any ill effects on the environment, had got published.

Replying to agitators Prasanna said that he had not issued any such press statement. During heated exchanges it was learnt that a press release issued by the UPCL Vice President Kirshore Alva had the quotes of Tahasildar Prasanna. Later Tahasildar assured the agitators that he would issue a show cause notice to the UPCL why the legal action could not be initiated against the company for misusing his name and the post.

Agitating activists also splashed salt water on the District Environment Officer Ravichandra for not taking any action against UPCL, even though their well water had been turned saline due to the discharge of release through the open well. At that time Ravichandra was in the pump house of the UPCL, at Yermal near Padubidri.

FIR registered for assault on Kashmiri students in Karnataka court premises

Hubli, Feb 19: The Karnataka Police on Wednesday registered a case against unknown persons for assaulting three Kashmiri students in the court premises here.

A suo motu FIR has been registered at Vidyanagar police station of Hubli in which assault charges have been filed against 10 to 15 unknown people.

It can be recalled that on February 17 these three Kashmiri students were attacked in court premises after they were produced in court on charges of sedition.

The Kashmiri students were arrested here on February 15 after their video in which they are seen allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans went viral.

The students were studying at the KLE Institute of Technology on a central government scholarship.

Mangaluru | Fish trade voluntarily suspended for 10 days over corona outbreak scare

Mangaluru, Jun 23: The wholesale fresh fish dealers have voluntarily decided to suspend sale for 10 days from June 24 in the wake of fresh coronavirus outbreak in the region.

Convening the collective decision of the traders in a letter, K Ashraf, working president of the association of Mangaluru fisheries harbour fish traders and commission agents, has urged the deputy commissioner to formally impose ban on fish trade in the city for next 10 days to prevent the spread of the covid-19.

Mr Ashraf stated that decision was taken as many fish traders suffering from symptoms such as cough, cold and fever for last few days and some of the traders have got themselves admitted in hospitals for treatment.

The letter urged the DC to prevent and ban unauthorized traders selling fish not only in Bander but also in neighbourhoods like Ullal Kotepur, Hoige Bazar, Bengre, Farangipet, near VRL, Kudroli, Kallapu and Maripalla.

2nd flight chattered by KSCC brings 171 stranded Kannadigas from UAE to Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jun 27: The second flight chartered by the Karnataka Sports and Cultural Club (KSCC) to repatriate stranded Kannadigas in UAE landed at Mangalore International Airport at 6 p.m. today.

The Air Arabia flight with 171 passengers took off from Sharjah international airport around 1 am (UAE Time). The flight had 18 pregnant women, 9 children, 3 infants, 8 senior citizens, 20 people with medical emergencies besides those have lost jobs, stranded visit visa holders and those who had reported deaths in their families.

KSCC had set up help desk to finalize list of passengers and guide them throughout the process. All the legal procedures were carried out smoothly.

KSCC president Mohammed Ismail accorded a warm welcome to all passengers. Rapid tests for Covid-19 were conducted before departure. Mandatory quarantine for all the passengers was arranged in three hotels in Mangaluru for a period of seven days.

KSCC office bearers Ismail, Javed, Safwan and volunteers were present at the airport during the time of departure. KSCC has expressed its gratitude to Consulate General, DC of DK district, Umar U H and Ataullah Jokkate for their support.
