MSEZ issue: Palemar appeals protestors to withdraw hunger strike

Mangalore, March 5: Krishna J Palemar, District in-charge Minister met the job seekers of Project Displaced Families (PDFs) of Mangalore Special Economic Zone who are holding indefinite hunger strike in front of the Deputy Commissioner's Office on Saturday here.

Palemar promised that he would solve the problem after discussing the matter in front of officials concerned by March 22.

He also appealed the protesters to withdraw their indefinite hunger strike assuring them that their demands will get fulfilled at the earliest.

However, speaking to Coastaldigest.com, Lokesh, protest coordinator said there will be no compromise with regard to our demands and the protest would not be withdrawn at any cost.

He said “We will not accept any compromise formula which does not meet our demands. Let them provide jobs for us in MRPL or ONGC as per the promise made during the land acquisition”

The protesters have already warned the district administration and MSEZ authorities of shifting the protest venue to MRPL site.

Mangaluru, Jan 1: Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said here on Tuesday that the State government will think about making policy on giving compensation to the families of those who have died in police firing.

Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday, he said that the government withholding compensation to the families of two persons who died in police firing in the city on December 19 after a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act turned violent and even in 2006 when two persons had died in police firing at Mulky in Dakshina Kannada the then State government had not given any compensation to their families.

In the latest case, the First Information Report (FIR) has named the two persons who had died in the firing as the accused. After the incident, there were demands to provide compensation to the families of the victims.

Mangaluru, Apr 15: For the convenience of the public during the lockdown period, the Department of Posts has been providing essential services to the public at its various branch offices which are functioning from 1000 hrs to 1400 hrs.

Medicines and other essential items can be sent via parcel from any town to any place in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Arrangements are also being made to extend this facility to nearby districts. In case of sending medicines and other essentials to other states from Mangaluru, the transportation has to be done via Bengaluru and can be expedited if a request for urgency is made, says a press release from the Senior Superintendent of Posts of Mangaluru Division on Wednesday.

Mandya, Jan 25: A woman committed suicide by jumping into Vishveshwaraiah Canal after throwing her two children into the canal near Thibbanahalli in the Taluk, police said on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Jyothi (33), Nisarga (7) and Pavan (4), of Hullenahalli.

According to police, the incident occurred on Friday.
