Displaced Malekudiya families to get Rs. 10 lakh

Mangalore, March 6: Each family of the Malekudiyas displaced from the Kudremukh National Park will get Rs. 10 lakh. They will also get land, including those without “pattas”, said Subodh Yadav, Dakshina Kannada District Deputy Commissioner.

He was speaking at a UGC-sponsored workshop titled “Malekudias in transition: a survey cum study” in Canara First Grade College in the city on Saturday. A team of 13 students, part of the Socio-cultural Research and Study Centre (SCRCT) of the college, had studied the issue and organised the meet.

Mr. Yadav said, “We had a meeting and have decided to give Rs.10 lakh to each family. We are also discussing how we should decide who deserves more or less than Rs.10 lakh. Even if they come out of the forest, they do not get land. So we have decided they should get land, including those who do not have a patta.” N. Yogish Bhat, MLA and Deputy Speaker in the Assembly, said that methods must be thought of how the Centre and the State could work jointly to ensure that all the Malekudia families get their compensation. Of the 420 affected families, 12 had been compensated.

Mr. Bhat said the college must make a similar study on the Kudubis, who were in a similarly fashion. Vasanthi, a Malekudia activist, said Rs.10 lakh compensation was inadequate. Malekudias were born and had grown up in the forests and now they had to fight for their rights. Because their occupation had been only agriculture, the community members had no money, she said. Elyanna K, member, Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel, constituted by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), said that people displaced by SEZ projects were given several facilities but the Malekudias had got nothing.

Karnataka cops arrest 4 peddlers from Kerala, seize drugs worth Rs 1.25 cr

Bengaluru, July 29: The Central Crime Branch arrested four international drug peddlers belonging to Kerala and recovered drugs worth Rs 1.25 crore from them, said Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday.

"We have started a war on drugs. Our agenda is to curb the drug mafia not only in Bengaluru, but in entire Karnataka. Many people are involved in the drug mafia. They are targeting students, other states, and international students who can spend and afford to become victims," said Bommai.

The recovered items include 2,000 kg LSD strips, 110 grams MDMA Cristol, 10 ecstasy tablets, 5 kg Ganja, five cell phones, weighing machine and pouches.

"When we raided a house in Soladevanahally police station area, we arrested Shahad Mohammed, Azmal, Ajin KG Verghese and Nitin Mohan. All are from Kerala and we will arrest their contacts as well. They are involved in the dark web mafia," Bommai said.

He said the peddlers were using post offices and couriers for their business.

"I'll speak to the central government, the home ministry and postal department, and other issues related to this mafia. Canada, Netherlands, and other nations are also involved in this mafia," said the state home minister.

"People from influential backgrounds are also involved in this mafia, but our objective is zero tolerance. We are using our intelligence. Drugs are coming from other states like AP, Goa, and other states," he said.
Bommai said he was personally addressing this case and appealed for support from parents, schools and colleges.

"I'm addressing this issue personally because it's important to curb the drug mafia. I need support from schools and college managements and parents. I'll also call college and hostel managements before colleges start. We will make managements responsible," he said.

Will protest if Indian Muslims are troubled by NRC, says Ramdev

Hubballi, Jan 30: Seeking to disabuse people of the notion that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), recently passed by the BJP-led central government threatened the legitimacy of Muslims in the country, yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Wednesday said that he would among the first to take to the streets should the community face any such trouble. “If the National Register of Citizens (NRC) threatens injustice to Indian Muslims, it I not just I, but a billion Indians will protest against its implementation,” he added.

Recalling his longstanding association with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ramdev said, “I have known Modi for more than 15 years, and I can assure you that he cannot be called anti-Muslim. There is nothing in the CAA that threatens the rights of Muslims, some of whom are being misled by a few.”

The yoga guru said that, while 99% of the Muslims in India were patriotic, the remaining ones were seeking to divide the country, which he said was resulting in Islam falling into disgrace. “I appeal to all Muslims to keep away from such anti-national forces seeking to bring a bad name to Islam,” said Ramdev, calling on the people to stay united in the face of the severe economic crisis that the country was presently in the grips of.

He added that he was as committed to his goal of getting black money back to India. However, when quizzed by journalists as to how long he was willing to wait for PM Modi to realise this objective, Ramdev said, “Chodi, mere aur Modi ke beech jagada mat lao (Please do not incite a fight between Modi and me).”

The yoga guru also endorsed the decision of the Centre to recognise singer Adnan Sami with a Padma award.

Karnataka govt asks industries not to deduct salaries of employees during lockdown

Bengaluru, Apr 14: Karnataka Labour Department has issued an order instructing public and private establishments not to cut salaries or lay off employees during the lockdown imposed to counter Coronavirus.

In view of Covid-19, there may be incidents where services of employees or workers may be dispensed with on the pretext of the disease or employees may be forced to go on leave without pay, the Ministry of Labour and Employment said.

Legal action will be initiated if any establishment violates this advisory, Labour Department Secretary P Manivannan said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.
