13 locals return from Libya

Mangalore, March 8: As many as 13 people from coastal Karnataka, who were working in the volatile country of Libya have safely returned home on Monday.

They are PC Manjunath, Anand Moolya, Navachandra Rao, Prakash Shetty, Hamza, Shekhar, Victor Rego, NM Vijayakumar, Mohan Adoor, Padmanabh Boloor, R K Bhat, Ashokan and Narayan Shetty all residents of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. They were working for Sirte Oil Company in Marsa El Brega, in Libya along with a Keralite, who also has returned.

Although, they had begun their homecoming journey on March 2, it took a long time for them to reach their destination, due to various reasons.

Initiating their journey by bus, 13 Kannadigas and a Keralite moved to Cairo in Egypt, where, after two days they boarded the Gulf Air flight to Bahrain, from where they caught a Mumbai bound flight. Finally an Indian Airlines flight brought them to Mangalore at 12:15 pm on Monday.

Revealing the horrific experience they underwent since the outbreak of anti-government protests in the oil rich company, PC Manjunath, a resident of Kavoor said the brutal crackdown on anti-government protests has turned the North African country into a battle field.

Although, the government forces were targeting only anti-government protesters they have been compelled to return home, after the violence spread to the place where they lived. He said that as many as 65 Indians working for the same company have left the conflict-torn country along with them.

However, he expressed gratitude to the Indian embassy, for its responsible and kind attitude towards the stranded Indians. He also said that the union government bore all the expenses of their travel.

Bengaluru, Feb 5: Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday said that he has demanded a report on the Shaheen School incident after reports emerged that children were allegedly interrogated by the police for hours at a stretch, while not allowing parents to be present.

Terming the incident a very sensitive matter as it involves children, Basavaraj Bommai said, "I have asked for a report on the Shaheen School incident. As it is a very sensitive and serious issue, I have asked the police to handle it carefully."

"I have asked the police to take the help of the women and child protection committee at the district level. However, I have been told that the police had visited the area where the play was done and no interrogation of children in isolation took place. Nevertheless, I have asked the police to handle the issue with care and do everything within the law," Basavaraj added.

The matter pertains to a programme organised as a part of the Republic day celebrations where the children in Shaheen School in Bidar had staged a play against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had protested alleging that the play at Shaheen School in Bidar was derogatory. In the play, the participants were shown staging an anti-CAA sequence where there were dialogues encouraging non-cooperation with anyone asking for documents. A case was registered against the school management.

Meanwhile, CEO of Shaheen Education Institute, Bidar, Tauseef Madikeri had said, "Police have invoked Sections 124A, 505 and 504 of the IPC against the institution, over a play staged against CAA and NRC. It is beyond anyone's imagination. Deputy SP visited the classroom and interrogated the students."

Karnataka police had sealed the offices of the school after its students participated in the play. Meanwhile, the police had questioned students of Shaheen School after a play against the CAA and NRC was staged during the Republic Day celebrations.

The child rights groups, teachers and educationists had issued a statement condemning the police interrogation in the incident.

Bengaluru,  Aug 1: As many as 5,172 new COVID-19 cases and 98 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Saturday, taking the state's count of coronavirus cases to 1,29,287.

The active cases in the state now stand at 73,219 while 53,648 people have been discharged.

"5,172 new COVID-19 cases and 98 deaths reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, taking total cases to 1,29,287 including 53,648 discharges and 2,412 deaths. The number of active cases stands at 73,219," said State Health Department.

So far, a total of 2,412 people have died in the state.

India, on Saturday, reported 57,117 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country's coronavirus tally to 16,95,988, said the Union Health Ministry.

Mangaluru, Aug 2: Former Minister and Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader has gone into self-quarantine after former MLC Ivan D’Souza tested positive for coronavirus. 

Mr D’Souza had met Mr Khader and many other Congress leaders a day before receiving his throat swab test results. 

Mr Khader announced on twitter: “Have gone into self-quarantine with immediate effect after receiving the news about #Covid_19 positive test of Former MLC Ivan D’Souza & his wife Dr Kavitha. Being COVID Incharge DK District taskforce committee, I am one among Ivan's primary contact.”

“I am going to discharge my duties from home for the next few days. You can reach out over phone at any point of time. I appeal to all my colleagues and friends who may have come in contact with us in the last few days to get tested for #Covid_19” he tweeted.
