Women should join civil services: Puttur ASP Rohini Katoch

Mangalore, March 8: Women should join the civil service department in large numbers, said Rohini Katoch, Assistant Superintendent of Police of Puttur division.

She was speaking after inaugurating a one day workshop on “Celebrating the Past, Planning the Future” organized under the auspices of St Agnes College here on Tuesday to mark International Women's Day.

Katoch said civil service department gives plenty of opportunities and a huge platform for women to build confidence. Women should not think that they are fit for only some kind of jobs, she said.

Calling upon the students to be confident and bold, Katoch said they should not let others take decisions concerning them.

“Knowledge is the power. Empower and enrich yourselves with the knowledge,” she said, adding that hard work is the key to success.

Dr C Prem M D'Souza, Principal of the College presided over the function.

The students staged a Hindi play “Yahan Rona Mana Hai” on women and women's issue.

Dr Poornima J, Senior Specialist in Gynecology, Lady Goschen Hospital, Sr Maria Kripa were present.

Shammy Shiri, Assistant Professor, Welcome Graduate School of Hotel Management Manipal and Dr Prema D'Cunha, Gynecologist, Fr Muller Medical College Hospital spoke on “Problems faced by adolescents” and “Women and problems of cancer” respectively.

Bengaluru, May 13: Gym and hotels, which had remained closed due to lockdown to combat spread of Coronavirus, would be allowed to function from May 17, Karnataka Minister for Tourism C T Ravi said on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media, after a meeting with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa here he said that the Chief Minister has agreed to give permission to gym, hotels and golf clubs to function and as they have assured to maintain social distance and follow other guidelines of the lockdown.

Mr Ravi, who is also Minister for Youth Empowerment and Sports, further said that reopening of hotel industry would help in attracting tourists. Opening of gym and fitness centre was important for sports persons and regular exercisers.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: After pro-Kannada outfits called for a state-wide bandh today, the police are on high-alert to avoid any untoward incidents.

The dawn to dusk bandh was called demanding implementation of Sarojini Mahishi report which recommended certain percentage of jobs to Kannadigas in private & public sector companies.

There is no official holiday declared for schools and colleges. Besides, all government institutions and private establishments are open.

But, in some parts of Karnataka, autorickshaws and taxis, including Ola and Uber stayed off the roads.

Even though the bandh is unlikely to hit normal life in coastal Karnataka, stones were pelted on a Tirupati-Mangaluru bus in Farangipet.

Chikkamagaluru, Jan 10: At least 15 RSS activists protesting against the 16th Chikkamagaluru District Kannada Sahitya Sammelan at Sringeri were detained, Police said here on Friday.

The Sangh Parivar activists gathered near the entrance of the hall where the event was being held and started sloganeering against the election of the leftist Kalkuli Vittal Hegde as the president of the literary gathering. The police then interfered and detained several protesters to bring situation under control.

Despite protests from the right wing organisations, the event went ahead and began as per the schedule.
