Medical college fines students Rs 10,000 for using cellphone on campus

Mangalore, March 9: Using a cell phone while driving will attract a fine of Rs 300. But in a medical college campus here, it's Rs 10,000, plus confiscation of the cell phone and a week's suspension. It doesn't matter whether the cell phone is used in the classroom or college building or campus.

If this is the highest fine imposed on cell phone use, there are other violations which attract hefty fines which range from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000 at Fr Muller Medical College.

Miss one hour class, you will have to pay Rs 500. There's uniform fine of Rs 1,000 for returning late after holidays, wearing jeans, sporting stubble or if the first button of the shirt is open. One of the administrators of the college said hefty fines were a deterrent and they hadn't penalized anyone so far.

Shwetha Rasquinha conferred doctorate by Mangalore University

Mangaluru, Jan 2: Shwetha Rasquinha, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Social Work, St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, has been awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by the Mangalore University for her thesis titled “Effectiveness of Social work intervention on caretakers of cancer patients- A social work study in Mangalore”.

She did her studies under the guidance of Dr Rameela Shekhar, Professor (Rtd), School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru.

Ms Shwetha Rasquinha hails from Vittal, D/o Vincent Rasquinha and Late Regina Rasquinha, and is the second person to complete doctoral studies from the Vittal Parish.

Her colleagues and well-wishers have congratulated her for her highest achievement in academics and successful completion of quality research.

Magisterial enquiry into Mangaluru police firing postponed amid corona scare

Mangaluru, Mar 23: The magisterial enquiry into the police firing during the anti-CAA protest on December 19 in Mangaluru, has been postponed following the lockdown of Dakshina Kannada district, Udupi DC G Jagadeesh announced on Monday.

The inquiry by Udupi DC G Jagadeesh was scheduled on Monday. Already, City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha and others have deposed before the magistrate. The Deputy Commissioner and the Assistant Commissioner were supposed to appear before the magistrate.

Following the December 19 violence and the death of Nausheen and Jaleel due to alleged police firing, the state government had commissioned two probes-- one magisterial and the other, a CID inquiry.

As per the government order, a report on the inquiry was to be submitted before March 23. On the request by the magistrate for more time since the documents and videos had to be examined, the government had asked him to submit the report by April 23.

Forest officials arrest 2 while trying to sell elephant tusks worth lakhs

Mangaluru, Jan 8: In an operation, forest officials of Puttur has arrested two persons as many elephant tusks at Puduvettu in Belathangadi taluk of Dakshina Kannada.

Forest officials said on Wednesday the accused nabbed last night were identified as PK Dinesh from Madikeri and V Kumar from Hassan district.

Both were caught while trying to sell tusks the value of which was estimated to be lakhs.
