Anti-UPCL activists burn Acharya's effigy

Udupi, March 10: Activists of Udupi district unit of Raitha Sangha and Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samithi on Wednesday burnt the effigy of Higher Education Minister and Udupi District Incharge Minister Dr VS Acharya, protesting against his pro UPCL (erstwhile Nagarjuna) statement.

It is to be noted here that in-spite of the on going people's agitation against the coal based power plant creating heath and environmental hazards in the Padubidri region, Minister had stated that there was no question shutting down the power plant.

Activists headed by Raitha Sangha district president Vijay Kumar Hegde and Shashidhar Shetty shouted slogan against Dr VS Acharya and burnt his effigy at the Padubidri Circle in the evening. They also shouted slogan against the Chief Minister Yedyurappa and Minister for Power Shobha Karandlaje.

"If the local MLA and the incharge minister fail to visit the project site to listen to grievances of the sufferers and evacuees, we would intensify the agitation till the project is permanently stopped'', Hegde said.

Mangaluru, May 31: Eminent social worker, former Principal of School of Social Work Dr Olinda Pereira, passed away on Sunday.

She was 95.

Mahatma Gandhi Peace awardee Pereira promoted Women’s Education and Development in several States. She has left an indelible mark in the state of Karnataka, India and overseas.

Dr Olinda Pereira publications include: Understanding Children – 1,2,3, Sallak Publications – 1974; Adjustment and its Correlates among Pre-adolescents – Preeti Publications – 1977; Domestic Workers Struggle For Life-A.T.C Publications – 1985.

Bengaluru, Jan 14: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the government of Karnataka while hearing the plea for ordering Judicial probe into the December 19, violence and police action in Mangaluru.

On December 19, the local police while taking action against anti-CAA and NRC protesters had fired at them which had killed two citizens. The police action was then followed by curfew in the region for over 48 hours.

The High Court bench hearing the plea of JD(s) leader Iqbal and Sullia Pattan Panchayat member Iqbal seeking its intervention to order judicial probe into the matter has issued the notice to the government.

Mangaluru, Jan 17: A poultry truck transporting chickens overturned on Friday at Perne village near Uppinangady on Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway, killing 200 of them.

Police said that the truck was headed towards Mangaluru from Uppinangady when the truck driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to topple. As many as 200 chickens were killed in the mishap.

Another vehicle was later used to transport the remaining chickens.
