Sloppy roadwork exposes pipeline near Jeppu

Mangalore, March 12: Suresh Nair and his family members are worried that the water supply line near his house may burst and water will gush into their house at Marnamikatte. He has just removed the water and the silt that got accumulated early on Friday.

The cause of the problem is the haphazard laying of cement concrete road leaving the water supply line without any support.

This resulted in the pipe breaking and floods in Mr. Nair's house whose floor was below the road level.

“We had a nightmare when water started to accumulate around Thursday midnight,” Mr. Nair said. As the water logging increased, Mr. Nair called the Mangalore City Corporation and sought help. “It was attended around 2 a.m. when the water had accumulated to knee level (in the house),” he said. It took a long time for him to drain away the water and remove the accumulated silt, he said.

Mr. Nair said it all started three months ago when the authorities removed a portion of the road connecting the Paris Bhat compound residents with the Marnamikatta Circle.

The Paris Bhat compound residents were then connected to the road passing through Mr. Nair's house. This, Mr. Nair said, exposed the water supply line underneath the road that was removed.

On Wednesday, Mr. Nair's house was flooded when water gushed out at the farther end of the supply line. The water logging on Friday morning was because of the leakage of the water supply line near his house.

Following his complaint, Corporation Commissioner K.N. Vijayaprakash visited Mr. Nair's house on Friday. Mr. Nair said Dr. Vijayaprakash had assured him that a retaining wall would be built to support the water supply line and also prevent land slide during rainfall. Dr. Vijayaprakash did not answer calls made to him.

Bengaluru, May 22: Evacuation planes from Male in Maldives and Doha in Qatar landed in Bengaluru with returnees from Karnataka after they were stranded for two months due to suspension of international flights since March 23 and the extended lockdown, an official said on Friday.
 
"An Air-India flight (#0266) with 152 passengers from Male and its subsidiary Express flight (IX-0822) with 177 returnees and 5 infants from Doha landed here safely at 6.50 pm. and 9.05 pm respectively," an airline official told media persons in Bengaluru.
 
Both the flights are first from their respective countries to Bengaluru, bringing in returnees to the southern state in the second phase of the Vande Bharat mission, being carried out to evacuate Indians stranded the world over.
 
"As per the standard operating procedure and guidelines of the state health department, all the passengers were screened with thermal device and tested to ensure they were asymptomatic before leaving the airport," a nodal officer said.
 
The returnees were given a spare mask to wear all the time and a sanitiser to wash their hands.
 
"The luggage of all passengers was screened and disinfected before handing over to them after they completed formalities such as filling the self-declaration form and downloading of the Quarantine App for contact tracing later,” said the official.
 
The passengers were ferried from the airport in state-run buses in batches for 14-day institutional quarantine in hotels and resorts across the city.
 
The flights were the 6th and 7th flights to Karnataka, of the national carrier and its Express arm, which are operating the service to repatriate thousands of Indians, including distressed workers, migrants, students, senior citizens and tourists, stranded overseas.
 
Five flights have flown about 650 returnees till date from May 18-21 under the mission's second phase to Bengaluru and Mangaluru on the west coast. The passengers have been brought from Dubai in the UAE, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Muscat in Oman, Dammam in Saudi Arabia and San Francisco in the US.
 
The remaining flights to Karnataka will land in Bengaluru and Mangaluru over the next 12 days till June 3 from 9-10 more destinations the world over.
 
In the first phase of the mission from May 7-17, the airline and its arm flew 6 flights to the state from May 11-15, bringing in 800 passengers, including 623 to Bengaluru and 177 to Mangaluru from London, Singapore, San Francisco and Dubai.

Bengaluru, Jun 18: Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) was reprimanded for withholding information, sought by a candidate regarding an examination held in 2005 for Gazeted Probationary posts, by the State Information Commissioner here on Thursday.

According to official sources, the State Information Commissioner NP Ramesh, while disposing off a petition by the candidate, who had written an examination conducted by the KPSC for the gazeted probationary posts held in 2005, had directed to provide the information sought by the candidate, free of costs within ten days.

The State Information Commissioner in his order had termed the conduct of the KPSC as against the spirit of transparency among the public authorities.

Mangaluru, Jul 13: Air India Express flight brought around 170 passengers from Bahrain to Mangaluru under Vande Bharat Mission yesterday. 

This is the first VBM flight from Bahrain to Mangaluru. The flight took off from Bahrain at 10 am on Sunday and landed at Mangaluru International airport at 4.45 pm. 

Even though thousands of Indian expatriates from other gulf countries were brought to Mangaluru in past few weeks, no flight was arranged from Bahrain so far. Hence, several Mangalureans including senior citizens, women and patients were stranded in Bahrain for months together.

Local entrepreneur and president of Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) Mohammed Mansoor, who saw the plight of the hapless Indian expatriates in Bahrain had discussions with the Indian embassy in Bahrain and convinced it to arrange a special Air India Express flight under the Vande Bharat Mission. 

IOC, along with the cooperation of ‘KHK Heroes’ had arranged meal kits for passengers during their flight to Mangaluru. IOC had also contacted all the Mangaluru-based NRIs who wanted to fly back to India and made a list with the help of Indian embassy to avoid any untoward incidents.

IOC had also given details of hotels to be quarantined in Mangaluru and Udupi, names of nodal officers to be contacted and emergency telephone numbers. The passengers were given a warm farewell by the office bearers of IOC from Bahrain international airport.

The effort taken by Mohammed Mansoor, president of IOC is lauded by all. All the passengers who travelled by the flight have thanked IOC and its office bearers whole heartedly.
