Sloppy roadwork exposes pipeline near Jeppu

Mangalore, March 12: Suresh Nair and his family members are worried that the water supply line near his house may burst and water will gush into their house at Marnamikatte. He has just removed the water and the silt that got accumulated early on Friday.

The cause of the problem is the haphazard laying of cement concrete road leaving the water supply line without any support.

This resulted in the pipe breaking and floods in Mr. Nair's house whose floor was below the road level.

“We had a nightmare when water started to accumulate around Thursday midnight,” Mr. Nair said. As the water logging increased, Mr. Nair called the Mangalore City Corporation and sought help. “It was attended around 2 a.m. when the water had accumulated to knee level (in the house),” he said. It took a long time for him to drain away the water and remove the accumulated silt, he said.

Mr. Nair said it all started three months ago when the authorities removed a portion of the road connecting the Paris Bhat compound residents with the Marnamikatta Circle.

The Paris Bhat compound residents were then connected to the road passing through Mr. Nair's house. This, Mr. Nair said, exposed the water supply line underneath the road that was removed.

On Wednesday, Mr. Nair's house was flooded when water gushed out at the farther end of the supply line. The water logging on Friday morning was because of the leakage of the water supply line near his house.

Following his complaint, Corporation Commissioner K.N. Vijayaprakash visited Mr. Nair's house on Friday. Mr. Nair said Dr. Vijayaprakash had assured him that a retaining wall would be built to support the water supply line and also prevent land slide during rainfall. Dr. Vijayaprakash did not answer calls made to him.

Bengaluru, Mar 29: Escoms have been directed neither to penalise its customers nor go for disconnection if one fails to pay the bill. The relief is applicable till June. However, the entire bill will have to be paid at the end of three months.

The revised power tariff, which was to be announced on April 1, has also been deferred.

A similar three-month relief has been given on rentals for APMC and BBMP shops.

Mangaluru, Jul 20:  Ananthapadmanabha temple at Kudupu on the outskirts of Mangaluru will be closed for devotees on the occasion of Nagara Panchami on July 25 due to Covid-19.

Ananthapadmanabha temple at Kudupu is one of the famous temples in Dakshina Kannada dedicated to Naga (Serpent God) where Nagara Panchami is celebrated in a grand way.  The temple committee said that "Nagara Panchami will be observed on July 25. To avoid large gatherings, the entry of devotees is banned. The devotees should not visit the temple, thereby extend cooperation with the temple committee."

On the day of Nagara Panchami, no sevas, theertha and prasadam will be distributed. There will be no mass feeding as well.

Bengaluru, Mar 25 : Karnataka recorded its highest single-day tally to date, as 10 people tested positive, taking the total number of cases to 51 in the state.

“Till date 51 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state which includes one death and three discharged," the health department said in a statement on Wednesday.

The rise in cases adding to the growing national tally of people who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The daughter of a former union minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Karnataka has also tested positive.

Bengaluru accounts for 32 of the total 51 cases recorded in the state so far,including three who have fully recovered and released.

Dakshina Kannada has five confirmed cases, Chikkaballapura and Kalaburagi has three cases each, Mysuru has and Uttara Kannada has two cases each and four other districts have one case each.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a 21-day lockdown of the country to keep people indoors and contain the spread of the virus in the community.

The government has also been trying to scale up testing.

Medical education minister K.Sudhakar on Wednesday told Mint that Karnataka will scale up testing by 10-fold with the help of government and private labs approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

A total of 2,438 people have been tested in Karnataka and 2242 have tested negative, according to state health department. 214 people are lodged in medical hospitals.
